We won 13 times in 2007 and I didn't see that getting us a single thing except a bloated ego and the idea that gosh darn it our luck was just bad.

Well I guess its just a catch22 situation with you and there is no possible way to fix it.

I think this team is tough. I just think that sometimes that they find the most off the wall ways to lose games.

In 2007 it really wasn't a problem and everyone had us labled as the 2nd best team in the league.

Giants were the cowards. Coughlin worst coach ever.

Then they beat us in the playoffs and all of a sudden everything changes for them and for us.

We still have a good team but the Cowboys worst enemy is the Cowboys.

We are the poster boys for getting in our own way.

Regardless of what you think about how genuine the comments are, I have yet to hear anything from anyone to dispute it. Not once since Parcells left has anyone talked about being in a dogfight with us. They did when Coach Parcells was here, even the Giants would comment (Pierce had stated that several times). Now we have cake-eaters and players who think a bye equals a win (we all know where that comes from). We have developed a nauseating case of entitlement that I hope has gone away.

ON THE WEEKEND of the Super Bowl, at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, Ariz., Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mingled with the enemy. It had been less than three weeks since his team lost to the Giants in a divisional playoff that Jones was certain Dallas would win. Agony engulfed the Metroplex, but Jones had recovered to the extent that he attended an NFL Network party. He worked the room until about 8 p.m., when he ran into the guy with the gap-toothed grin who helped inflict all that pain in the first place.

Michael Strahan, the Giants' veteran defensive end, cornered Jones like a standstill quarterback. New York was shortly to play New England for the NFL title, but Strahan was not going to rub it in. In fact, he was doing the opposite. "Your team is the most physical we played all year," Strahan said. It was an unexpected endorsement, considering how Strahan and the rest of the Giants' front seven had bulldozed the Cowboys' offensive line. But his words stuck with Jones as he headed into the off-season and started to put his team back together again.

This Hodge (Brutus) strikes me as this possible type of player. I agree, we need some killer instinct on this team. I think Ratliff has it, and although is pro bowl effective at NT is still out of position. You would see it more if he was at DE. Same way you see it in Richard Seymour. The guy is a downright bully, him and Wilfork.

You guys have alot of pent up anger. Such violent language. I don’t care about George Teagues or any Cowboy players taking cheap shots at other players. I would rather George Teague play defense and stop TO from scoring at will. I want the Cowboys to stop killing themselves with dumb penalties and mental errors. If they do that then they dont have to defend against the loud mouths. Id rather players learn to make a tackle, hold onto the ball, make a block, run the right route, than have to “defend the Star”. Make plays and win the game, that will defend it just fine for me.
Wow - Amazing post.

See, that's what I mean by mental "toughness". That means not allowing yourself to take your reputation or your press clippings into a game and instead play physical hard-nosed brand of football. We just don't play with the same sense of violence you see others play us and too often we wilt from a physical fight. It might seem like a lack of focus, but being intimidated can often show up that way. It is about the mental attitude. We can beat the false bravado types or those teams that lack a physical nature, but you can see the results for yourself late in every season. We don't want it badly enough and frankly appear to fold at the first sign of adversity and then have to rally, which isn't the same.

Thinking someone is just going to take one look at you and roll over isn't tough. It's soft and arrogant. That was how we approached last season. Then when we decided to man up, it was too late (Cardinals, Ravens) or we never did it at all (Eagles). The only game I saw what I considered both toughness and resiliency was against the Steelers, but we let that slip away also because Romo couldn't execute.

You don't think being able to put the final nail in the coffin is a sign of toughness?

I don't disagree per se with what you are saying and perhaps we simply have different definitions. To me, toughness is being physical and imposing your will, not reacting to what comes about. We are resilient, but to me that's not the same as being tough. If we were boxers, we'd be getting knocked down but keep getting up instead of being the ones who are throwing the knockout punches.

Yep I agree with you on everything. I am not a fan of wade phillips and I hate his excuse making that has trickled all over this organization. Its sickening listening to him talk sometimes.

like you said we maybe defining the same things in different ways. Whatever it is I hope it has gone away. Running the football and stopping the run is the quickest way to getting that mental toughness.

I remember steve hutchinson after the 05 seattle game saying our defense was ridiculous and how they couldnt move us off the line of scrimmage. I think he said something to the effect of it was like running into a wall for 60 minutes.

Yet much like the steelers game this year, we lost the game. They are almost identical carbon copies of each other. We dominate the game, play good red zone defense and then in the final 3 minutes we give up a touchdown in the corner to a tight end and have our qb throw a game clinching pick!

Two coaches two different styles, same result. Both were against teams that went to the superbowl, we outplayed them both yet somehow lost in the end after a mistake.

2008 has made me throw my hands up with this bunch. I am just hoping that we play better defense and run the ball more. Some competition for positions in practice wouldnt hurt either.

How many times have we heard other teams whispering that we don't respond well to being punched in the mouth? Too often.

Whispering? More like TRUMPETED every SINGLE year since the Campo era (yes, that includes Parcells).

This was the primary reason I wanted Dallas to bring in enforcers (punishing hitters/fiery personalities who back it up w/their play) through the draft/offseason. There just aren't any REAL ones on this team, Columbo comes the closest. And James just talks tough.

And Buehler does not count. :D I have hope for Hodge though. But one guy does not a team attitude make. Especially a low draft pick.

I mean I hated the incident with Furrey and the star as much as anybody, but what was anybody supposed to do?

Would you hit a guy if you knew you were going to get a penalty, a fine, and maybe a suspension? This league is only made for the tough guys to do talk and act aggressively behind the scenese. Unfortunately, there is no behind the scenes with Dallas.
Truthfully? Yes, I would.

I never gripe about big hits. Not by our players or on our players as long as the hits are clean. It is part of the game. A huge clean hit, even if it's on one of our guys, is awe inspiring. I love it.

I still think it starts from the top...and Wade does not inspire me at all!

If the Cowboys had a coach that would show some fire, maybe the players would follow suit.

Hell, Wade doesn't even get in the face of his own players!

Now, on the flip side, Landry did not show fire on the sidelines, but every player he had knew that if you did not perform...all hell would break loose.

Until this team gets a hard nosed coach to demand respect, this team is always going to be soft.

IMO.

I won't defend Wade. I have his Dad's phone number and I want to tell him to go kick his boy right in the jeans, but I respect Bum so I don't call him.

I like Wade...and Bum, but this "nice guy" approach is not what a football team needs. Maybe back when...but not nowdays. Not if you want to win not only the game, but your pride. The team's pride.

What happened to good old fashion kick-*** Texas football? It got lost somewhere along the line...

Wade is a Bum, how about that?...Let's see if camp cupcake turns into a real training camp this time around...Let's see if some real leadership materializes...Let's see if for once, the penalties & discipline finally become an area of strength rather than weakness...Let's see if the December slide turns into a momentum building month into the playoffs in terms of play or whether they should pack it in November...Otherwise, Bum/Wade or whatever he is called will be done in Dallas

LOL! That would be funny to see someone do.

Although I completely disagree. i think he did get both down but I'm not sure if it would have changed the outcome of the game or not.

If I recall from watching it on classics the Steelers went down and scored like 10 more points after that.
