Sort of off topic: about Troy Aikman

I watched the, I think, 1993 championship game against the 49ers a few weeks ago. A lot of things stood out to me--Irvin, our passrush, our aggressive coverage, our aggressiveness as a team.

Troy Aikman, however, was just unreal. I can't believe how good he was. Our offensive line sucked in that game, but Troy was quick and worked the pocket brilliantly. when he threw the ball he was SO accurate.

It's really a shame that because his skill largely manifested through Emmitt's stats most people won't give him the credit he deserves, but man was he good.

He really looked exactly like Tom Brady does today, but with a stronger arm.

Anyway, Tony Romo has a long, long, long way to go before he's in Aikman's league.

when Tony is allowed to run the 2-minute offense, he's pretty Aikman-esque

Red and Romo need to get on the same page, and make the O quicker-paced, Romo shouldn't have to stand around waiting for something to develop, a lot more shorter routes will fix that

Sorry, Troy in today's NFL would make Romo look like a chump regardless of the scheme, and I'm a firm believer in Romo.

Romo lacks the zen-like calculative ability that Aikman had, and he equally lacks Aikman's composure.

Aikman might not have been capable of the magic tricks that Tony is, but he rarely allowed magic tricks to become a necessity. He just made everything easy.

None of this is to say that I don't find Garrett's offensive scheme from last year absolutely unacceptable if not painful and reeking of a mind boggling incompetence.

idk man, when Romo is on, he's on, and the pass-rush usually doesn't bother him when he can move around and get rid of the ball

Garrett's playcalling is really making him look mechanical

Different QBs, different skill sets. I don't know but the main difference I see in the two, at least at this point in Romo's career, is that when things were not going as planned, guys were not playing up to the level they should, Aikman would get in there faces and make it happen. Romo does not do that. He has to learn to stand up and slap guys around if need be. Otherwise, we will always be trading somebody away and blaming it on the guise that Romo needed the room to develope. To me, there is no way a WR should ever be in a position of having more control over the team then a Pro Bowl calibur QB should. JMO.

I don't know if Aikman could make it behind this offensive line.

Thats one of the great things about Romo imo.

Aikman was getting no time to throw against the 49ers and he still smoked them. Tony can conduct a circus better than Troy, but Troy didn't need any circuses. He just moved the ball downfield and looked bored doing it.

The thing about Aikman is that he actually helped the OL. Aikman was soo accurate that you could work him of a 3 and 5 step drop, in a timing offense, and the ball would be gone before the DLine could ever get there. The OL didn't have to hold there blocks nearly as long. With Romo, it's just the opposite. Romo likes to go deep so it actually puts more pressure on the OL to hold blocks. In addition to that, he's unpredictable. Now, that is sometimes good because that creates something else for the D to account for but it also is bad because the OL never knows where he's going to be. That makes it very hard to pass protect. With Aikman, you always knew where he would be and pretty much, when the ball was coming out because he was always on time.

I'm assuming you are talking about the 30-20 game. His accuracy was uncanny. That might be my favorite Aikman performance ( or the loss in the 94 Title Game). He was so efficient and a great leader. The definition of a quarterback. And he was a big time performer, he raised his game in the playoffs.

I like Tony Romo, but to mention him in the same breath as #8 - other than the fact they are both Cowboy qbs - is sacrilege imo.

Said it many times... Romo can't carry Troy's jock strap. That's not a knock on Tony; it's a testament to how good Aikman was. Even after being the absolute prototype QB and the #1 overall pick who won three Super Bowls, Troy is still probably the most underappreciated great player of the last 20 years.

Troy was supposed to live up to his 1st pick overall billing. Of course he still deserves all the credit he gets. But at the time he was supposed to be the best QB prospect since Elway.

Romo has so far exceeded anybody's expectations being an undrafted FA from a tiny school. Having said all that, I loved Troy and absolitely love Romo now.

This is where Hostile needs to post his story about watching Troy practice.

Aikman didn't look great with Coslett, so how could he look great with Garrett...

Aikman was the greatest QB to don the Cowboys uniform and Romo isn't anywhere near his level. The fact is, with Garrett, he'd get crushed, because the guy doesn't use play-action and his QB gets killed.

I see what you're saying, but who would know how to use Aikman and cater to his talents more than the guy who backed him up for so many years?

Because he seems to suck as a coach. How many players can't coach a lick in whatever professional sport they belong, despite 'knowing' what their players can do? We are a long way off from the Norv Turner days....
