Source: Campo a possibility to be Cowboys’ secondary coach

By CLARENCE E. HILL, JR.chill@star-telegram.com

The more things change.....well, you know the rest.

And when it comes to the Cowboys and hiring assistant coaches, it appears to be business as usual.

Despite owner Jerry Jones’ comments last week that the team’s three assistant coaching openings will give coach Wade Phillips a chance to hire coaches in line with his philosophy, it still doesn’t hurt to be in line with Jones’ philosophy.

According to a source, the Cowboys have requested and received permission to speak to Jaguars assistant Dave Campo about Dallas’ vacant secondary coaching position.

Campo’s possible return to Dallas comes five years after he was fired as head coach following three straight 5-11 seasons. Campo was the defensive coordinator in Cleveland in 2003 before spending the past four years in Jacksonville as assistant head coach/secondary.

He is available because the Jaguars have hired Donnie Abraham to coach the secondary.

Campo has proven to be a capable secondary coach. He was the Cowboys’ secondary coach on the 1992 and 1993 Super Bowl teams before serving as defensive coordinator from 1994-1999.

However, his possible hiring seemingly contradicts Phillips’ plans.

According to sources, Phillips attended the Senior Bowl last week looking for secondary coach who has experience in the 3-4 defense.

Campo, who came to Dallas with Jimmy Johnson in 1989, has always been a 4-3 coach.

If the Cowboys hire Campo, it will leave one position to fill — linebackers coach.

Expect that hire to be in line with Phillips’ philosophy because that position’s importance to the 3-4 defense.

The team hired former Browns defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who has experience with the 3-4, to coach the defensive line last week.

Not opposed to it. Bad head coach, good positional coach.

Well, he's definitely someone that wouldn't get raided in a year or two.

If Campo doesn't know the 34, then how can he help us? Once again Phillips and Stewart will have to spend their time teaching Campo the 34. Why bother when I would think there are defensive coaches probably available who knew the 34.

I'd prefer Dennis Thurman if Ravens new head coach Harbaugh wants bring in his own secondary coach and let Thurman go. Thurman's secondary in Baltimore has put up huge INT numbers and understand Thurman wants to come back to Dallas. BTW: Checked out Baltimore paper and there no word whether new Harbaugh has made any decision to keep Thurman or not.

What the secondary does has nothing to do with whether we run a 3-4 or 4-3.

Hmmmm...I don't know how to feel about it. I'm not a Campo hater, cause like others mentioned he's a good coach just a really bad head coach.

Well, Roy did have his best years under him. I would rather have fresh blood with this position though.

I guess I'm like everyone else...

On one hand, I think Campo is a good positional coach. On the other hand, without having experience in the 3-4, I don't see a ton of good. It does make it look like Jerry is meddling.

I guess it comes down to this very simple issue in my mind: Campo or who? Since some of the prime candidates don't seem to be available, is it possible that Campo is actually the best candidate?

Has a former head coach for a team ever "come home again" and coach as an assistant?

With Thomas, Thurman, and Gray apparently not available afterall, I doubt this is necessarily Jerry meddling. It could be Phillips is just looking for the best available and Campo may very well be that guy.
