"Monte Kiffin will not be returning to the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff in 2015, according to multiple sources.
Kiffin last season served as the Cowboys' assistant head coach/defense -- a nebulous title under which he served mostly as an on-field consultant. In 2013, he was the defensive coordinator for a unit that ranked among the worst in franchise history.

Monte Kiffin was the Cowboys' assistant head coach/defense last season.
Kiffin's last official duty with the Cowboys was to help coach at the Pro Bowl. He is the only coach who had an expiring contract not renewed other than Bill Callahan, who joined the Washington Commanders as offensive line coach after the Cowboys' season.

A source said that Kiffin, who turns 75 later this month, would like to continue coaching in some capacity.

he was kept on as a consultant. guess they don't need his consultation anymore? wonder if he requested to be let go so he can have more direct coaching opportunities elsewhere?

perhaps he goes to Alabama Crimson Tide to join you know who? *wink*

How could they treat a living legend this way? Horrible.

He taught Marinelli everything, and this is how he gets repaid.

A couple things here based on what has happened: (my opinions)

1. The in-season rift from last year between Kiffin and Marinelli resulted in the organization giving Marinelli the DC playcall duties and title. IIRC, Marinelli was upset at the fact that we kept running too much zone coverage and he let his frustations be known. This, coupled with the poor defensive results a season ago led the organization to make the change.

2. Marinelli's perceived "loyalty" is a bunch of media spin. First, it was Kiffin was kept on the staff because of Marinelli and now it was Marinelli was going to Tampa with his long time friend Lovie Smith. The fact that Marinelli stayed and that "he loves it here" with an organization that he has only been with 2 seasons compared to others shuts down this "loyal to a fault" notion. And now that Kiffin's contract will not be renewed, just re-affirms what Marinelli thinks about his former boss and what role he should have with the team.

3. This year's training camp offered a glimpse into Monte's future when he was relegated to riding the blocking sleds and really didn't have much interactions with the players/coaches. His role was pretty unclear and he looked more of the part of a guy just biding his time rather than someone having an active role with the team.

its the way it goes sometimes i guess. i don't know why. Tom Landry case in point.

Not to compare the two because Landry is Super God-like in the football pantheon. But you get the gist.

I guess the game just passes you by but your contributions are still there for people to build on.

all very good points. this could very well be the case. Kiffin didn't feel comfortable here. Seems like he is still itching to coach.
