One thing that stuck in my mind about Monte Kiffin was when I read an article concerning him that claimed the players had quit listening to him altogether. That's never a good sign.

I'd like to see that article..Might be a reason why we turned improved so much, plus having the McCain factor.

A couple things here based on what has happened: (my opinions)

1. The in-season rift from last year between Kiffin and Marinelli resulted in the organization giving Marinelli the DC playcall duties and title. IIRC, Marinelli was upset at the fact that we kept running too much zone coverage and he let his frustations be known. This, coupled with the poor defensive results a season ago led the organization to make the change.

2. Marinelli's perceived "loyalty" is a bunch of media spin. First, it was Kiffin was kept on the staff because of Marinelli and now it was Marinelli was going to Tampa with his long time friend Lovie Smith. The fact that Marinelli stayed and that "he loves it here" with an organization that he has only been with 2 seasons compared to others shuts down this "loyal to a fault" notion. And now that Kiffin's contract will not be renewed, just re-affirms what Marinelli thinks about his former boss and what role he should have with the team.

3. This year's training camp offered a glimpse into Monte's future when he was relegated to riding the blocking sleds and really didn't have much interactions with the players/coaches. His role was pretty unclear and he looked more of the part of a guy just biding his time rather than someone having an active role with the team.

Kiffin was in his first year of training them in the 4-3, of course they are going to be better in the 2nd year.

Marinelli seems like an evil man

I don't think there is a rift between Kiffen and Marinelli. They are good friends and is the reason why Marinelli came to Dallas in the first place. Kiffen stepped down on his own accord to let Marinelli become the DC. It was that because of some disagreement they had with the zone coverage and so forth.

Other than that I believe this loyalty spin between Lovie and Marinelli was nothing more than a fabricated lie. Yet people here believed that it was absolutely going to happen.

When a living legend who crafted one of the best NFL defenses in history speaks, you listen.

Is it an issue because he's 75, and they aren't renewing his contract? Or is the age not an issue, but the fact that they aren't renewing his contract that's the problem?

The Cowboys honored their end of the contract with Kiffin. So did he. He was a coaching free agent, and the Cowboys decided to move on. So goes life. No one is entitled to anything in this life.

Even those as decorated and accomplished as Monte Kiffin.

The issue is that Kiffin built Marinelli, then Marinelli betrays him this way.

Wow, fans really are completely ridiculous. Where do people come up with this stuff?

There is no "rift" between Kiffin and Marinelli. If there ever was an article with Marinelli insinuating we should play more man under Kiffin's tenure, it wasn't anything personal. The people who come up with these outlandish ideals have obviously never been a part of a thriving business before. Disagreeing with implementation =/= you hate someone. It's "strictly business."

I'm sure there has been plenty an amicable discussion on this topic long before any action was imposed. I'm also sure Marinelli and Kiffin will probably still be attending the same potluck gatherings.

Maybe Kiffin wants more action, maybe he has an inside somewhere on a job he really is interested in, who knows. There's a ton of maybe's but what isn't a "maybe" is some nefarious scheme by Marinelli and Dallas to "run him out of town." Get real.

The year prior to Marinelli taking over, Kiffen spoke. It ended up being one of the, if not the worst defense in the history of the Dallas Cowboys. We were pathetic under the tutelage of that living legend. A good man I'm sure of. A once great football mind that the game has passed by many years ago.

On the other hand, another old dude, Rod, took a bunch of average guys that lost Ware, Hatch, and Lee (injury) and helped assist the Cowboys to a divisional playoff game.

Rod had the benefit of those guys having been in the system a second year.

I think Kiffin deserved a second year as DC and more respect from someone he helped teach the game without being undermined.

Good luck, Monte.
He's dedicated a lot of his life to coaching/teaching. By all accounts, he's a good man.

No surprise though.
As they say, father time is undefeated...and every single one of us will be there at some point.

Well the Commanders are still set on running a 3-4, which is totally baffling.
Are you saying that hiring a well-respected defensive minded genius like Kiffin would not automatically motivate Snyder to scrap the 3-4 in favor of the 4-3? That's outrageously disrespectful.

In fairness to Snyder and Kiffin, Kiffin thought he would be a part of Dallas next season up until just this week. Too late for Snyder to hire him.

I am familiar with the Rooney Rule. Could you point out the NFL rule preventing a coach from being hired as a non-head coach when said coach is not currently under contract?
