Sources: Tyron Smith to visit Dallas...

So lets entertain the idea of the Cowboys taking Smith. If we do that, do you see Smith starting in his first year or even second year? I'm not sure I do. He has a lot of technique work he needs to master and he must get stronger. There is a good chance that if these things happen, we could have an All Pro type RT on our hands but that's a gamble. If we take him, what do we do at RT for the next Two seasons possibly?

If Jerry drafts him at #9 overall, there's a 100% chance he's the starter at RT opening day.

how do I have an agenda. I just think Carimi is a better player right now and thats what matters. I want a RT that can come in and start right now and thats Carimi. I don't think Smith can.

You might love Smith but he has never played LT. The big draft "experts" have never said Smith can play LT, they all say in a few years he can develop into a LT.
They may be right he might develop but I don't want to take a chacne on that when I can get the sure RT in Carimi and extra picks.

Trading back and getting a starting RT for the next 10 years in Carimi and an extra 2nd and mayeb 3rd if we tradeback again is alot better than Smith at 9 to play RT, who isn't anybeter than Carimi IMO. He is only rated high because he has more potential at LT.

Mayock, McShay, Kiper all say Carimi is the most sure OT in this draft. He is a day one RT plug in. Non say that about Smith. All I here about SMith is his athletic ability and his potential. I just think Dallas needs a replacement for Colombo now and the best RT for right now is Carimi.

I wouldn't mind Smith at 17-21 but not at 9. He isn't a day one LT. You don't draft RT in the top 10.

Don't you think that if SMith could play LT in the NFL he would have at USC. Imean if he isn't good enough to play LT at USC and you and most other people thinks he is going to be the next best LT in the NFL history then why not just wait till next year and draft USC LT Matt Kalil. HE must be a better LT than Smith, so he should be worth a top 5 pick.

I agree with everything you had to say here.

The 9th pick of the draft is valuable resource.
A player selcted 9th should fill this short list for me:
1) Play a higher impact position. QB, RB, WR, OLB, CB, NT
2) Needs to be an immediate starter.
3) Needs to ultimately play at an All-Pro level.

Any player that doesn't fill that list in short order is a miss in my book.

IMO if you want to compete for a SB you need the following:

22-30 Average to good players who in no way could be considered a liability.
Of those 5-7 should be at least a boderline Probowl guy and perhaps another 3-5 should be All-Pro quality.

The good news is that the Cowboys have 12 or so players playing between a ProBowl and All-Pro level. And fortunately for us most of them occupy the higher impact spots.

Problem is we don't even have 22 average to good players, let alone 30.

So the obvious play here as I see it is a trade down in round one.

We don't "need" even one more star type player. We do need 3-5 more average to good players. And we need them now.

I'll be honest, I don't see that. What I see in this kid is a lot of athletic potential. He's prototypical in that regard but he's got a lot in his game that is not technically sound and he looks like he needs to get stronger.

I don't see the Cowboys taking a chance with Romo so I don't know that he would be the de facto starter at RT.

Oh I'm not saying he's the pick at all. But we know Jerry. When he drafts 1st rounders, he expects them to play right away. It doesn't hurt that we have the best strength and conditioning coach in the NFL as well. Hopefully Houck would be able to fine tune his technique.

Oh, you mean you'll "go off what I see" from YouTube clips? And you've claimed that you've watched a few USC games, but do you really expect anyone to believe that you were isolating Tyron Smith's play individually snap-for-snap, what, five or six months ago before the NFL and college season was even over? Not to mention the fact it was way before Smith's name was even hinted at being a potential draft pick for Dallas?

And yes, the scouting department certainly isn't infallible for sure, but again, I'll kowtow to their experience, expertise and the fact they have access to real game footage of Tyron Smith playing at USC for the past couple of seasons. They have a much more comprehensive view of Smith's capabilties than just going off of your memory and a few YouTube clips.

I mean seriously, you've stated before that Smith didn't impress you because you didn't see him pancaking people. I trust our scouting department will have a much sophisticated approach to assessing a prospect.

I don't make any big deal over the Cowboys bringing in Smith or any of the other prospects. We agree on that point.

Which is funny because a couple times late last season I watched one of those late Saturday meaningless USC games just to keep an eye on Kristofer O'Dowd. He is probably a 6th round pick now, meanwhile one of our top candidates at 9 was 2 spots over and I wasnt even looking

Why are they requesting more film of him? Shouldlnt they have every second of every player by now?

They could be asking for practice tape on him.

I figured they had all that by now since this process gets so in-depth that they end up interviewing HS coaches, mentors, and even getting a psychological profile on a guy.

Im not saying irs a smoke-screen but I heard they were asking for more film on him than anyone a week or so ago. It was either from a podcast or NFLN I forget.

At first I was thinking they couldnt sign a FA and get him into camp in time to start but the rookies have to stay away as well so a guy like Clabo would be much more prepared to start day 1 than Tyron who does need time with Woicik.

Considering how he looked at the Combine and 29 reps at 225 with quite long arms Smith does not need much work with Woicik. At 307, he is heavy enough. And frankly he will be better from Day one then Colombo was last year and he will only get better.

He's just not a power player, and I don't think it has anything to do with his size. He's more likely to try to turn a guy out of the way that to try and outmuscle him.

He's a finesse blocker and that's fine... at LT. At RT, maybe not so much. Maybe if he's the guy they switch he and Free, but then Free will probably try and bolt for sure.

I'm sure there are other teams willing to play (and pay him) at LT.

What really disappointed me was how slow Smith is off the ball in what I've seen of him, maybe it's because he's at the tackle spot, maybe he relies on movement and not on the snap count, maybe he's just not quick twitch, but he definitely seemed late off the ball.

I read on on drafttek.com website. They have (had) T Smith mocked to the Cowboys.

there is a difference between negative and realistic.

Aw, you supercynics ALWAYS think that your relentless negativity is "realism"...

You're right, there is a difference, and you seem to consistently come down on the side of negative...

Hey Bear,

How are you? Haven't had much chance to talk to you of late. I hope you are well my friend.

Ok, you do that and I will go off what I see in the way a player plays.

And you think your ability to analyze players is superior to that of the Cowboys' staff??

One wonders why you're wasting your time gracing us with your infinite knowledge, instead of getting PAID for it...

Dallas also has Von Miller, Patrick Peterson, Gabe Carimi, Anthony Castanzo, and several other players coming in for visits.

And I'm sure you can show us a link, or links, verifying that??

I ask because while I think it's likely that most if not all of these players would be on their visit list, I haven't seen it confirmed by any "reputable" sources yet...

Bottom line, you seem to think quite highly of yourself as a personnel evaluator, and I frankly can't understand why... I mean, I like some of your takes-- I even agree with you that I don't care much for Tyron-- but your arrogance is almost beyond belief...

I would love to get paid for it but do you know how to get into this type of job. I have no clue. Do you have Jerry's #.

Also if you have ESPN insider go look it up. The listed Miller just today that will visit Dallas. I listed the rest because its called something not everyone else has, called common sense. I just dont understand why Tyron Smith visiting Dallas is news just like I didn't understand Dallas interviewing Cam Newton was news.

Well, so much for that common sense.

Hey Bear, I'm looking forward to your mock drafts as always, and the info you give out on the Cowboys. When will your first mock be out?
