how do I have an agenda. I just think Carimi is a better player right now and thats what matters. I want a RT that can come in and start right now and thats Carimi. I don't think Smith can.
You might love Smith but he has never played LT. The big draft "experts" have never said Smith can play LT, they all say in a few years he can develop into a LT.
They may be right he might develop but I don't want to take a chacne on that when I can get the sure RT in Carimi and extra picks.
Trading back and getting a starting RT for the next 10 years in Carimi and an extra 2nd and mayeb 3rd if we tradeback again is alot better than Smith at 9 to play RT, who isn't anybeter than Carimi IMO. He is only rated high because he has more potential at LT.
Mayock, McShay, Kiper all say Carimi is the most sure OT in this draft. He is a day one RT plug in. Non say that about Smith. All I here about SMith is his athletic ability and his potential. I just think Dallas needs a replacement for Colombo now and the best RT for right now is Carimi.
I wouldn't mind Smith at 17-21 but not at 9. He isn't a day one LT. You don't draft RT in the top 10.
Don't you think that if SMith could play LT in the NFL he would have at USC. Imean if he isn't good enough to play LT at USC and you and most other people thinks he is going to be the next best LT in the NFL history then why not just wait till next year and draft USC LT Matt Kalil. HE must be a better LT than Smith, so he should be worth a top 5 pick.
I agree with everything you had to say here.
The 9th pick of the draft is valuable resource.
A player selcted 9th should fill this short list for me:
1) Play a higher impact position. QB, RB, WR, OLB, CB, NT
2) Needs to be an immediate starter.
3) Needs to ultimately play at an All-Pro level.
Any player that doesn't fill that list in short order is a miss in my book.
IMO if you want to compete for a SB you need the following:
22-30 Average to good players who in no way could be considered a liability.
Of those 5-7 should be at least a boderline Probowl guy and perhaps another 3-5 should be All-Pro quality.
The good news is that the Cowboys have 12 or so players playing between a ProBowl and All-Pro level. And fortunately for us most of them occupy the higher impact spots.
Problem is we don't even have 22 average to good players, let alone 30.
So the obvious play here as I see it is a trade down in round one.
We don't "need" even one more star type player. We do need 3-5 more average to good players. And we need them now.
