Signed by Cowboys Spann-Ford reaches agreement on a three-year contract extension

We can get something for Schoonmaker...some team will want him for depth and special teams. 49ers backup TE just got hurt

I put this in the fame thread but it can go here also

13 personnel and modern tight end trends

Cowboys do this rarely. Last year it was under 2%. We run one tight end sets the vast majority of the time and when we run two, it’s BSF coming in to block on a running play.

It’s strategy, sure, but it’s also talent that dictates what we can do.

McVay has been stacking hybrid tight ends who can do it all and he can be tricky “will he run or will he pass” even when he has three tight ends at the same time. They ran 13 over 30% of the time last year. That blew the doors off anything ever before. He’s a genius and the league tends to follow his lead

We just extended BSF so we’re likely not going to follow this current trend and Ferg and Schoon can’t really fool anyone with “will he/won’t he” when they are in there anyway because neither are good blockers and BSF is pretty much just an extra OT who occasionally leaks out.

Cowboys tight ends and their usage is one of my main complaints about the offense and I’ve been grousing about it for awhile, but Schottenheimer has double downed on his Norv Turner training. I’d jsut like to see a bit more innovation

The salary cap for next year is projected to be in the $327-330M range.

That puts his deal at about 1.8% of the cap. That's nothing and likely saves the Cowboys money because he would have commanded more after this season.
Command more after the season? OK...

we just made a guy with 9 catches last year the 27th highest paid TE on a per year basis and there are 32 teams...
yes I know he's a blocker

I'm pretty sure you are comparing apples to oranges. Those other TE contracts you are comparing to are counting the entire contract not just the extensions. You would need to count this years for Spann-Ford to get a true comparison.

6m aav and 22m guaranteed is a bit rich for a guy who played 25% of offensive snaps as an extra OT. Maybe he’ll he the new swing tackle, lol

I’d like for us to have a tight end who can catch and block. We have three of them on the roster and not a one can do both.

Should this mean to expecr Spann Ford as TE-2 over Schoon ?

i also believe this is Schoon's lat year, right ?
He already was the 2 and has potential to be the 1. This might be the last year for Ferguson. Too many concussions for Ferguson.

He’s had two. That’s slightly above average.

And I get if that you get excited, but BSFhas 18 catches for 178 yards.

If Ferguson gets so bad that BSF is TE1, then we need to be trying to trade for a new tight end.

And this is coming from someone who thinks Ferg is a fantasy football mirage who doesn’t really make a big difference for the offense

Yeah, I don’t see starting potential at all when I look at Spann-Ford.

And what’s up with his last name? Did he take his husband’s? Wassup with the hyphen?
