This is such a dumb, oversimplified attempt at a catchall that people keep saying. The idea of signing a guy early doesn't mean you just pay them anything to get them signed and you get to say this. At the end of the day what you pay them is what matters most. The reason people complain about waiting to sign guys is because it usually leads to an overpay on a player you knew you wanted all along and were going to pay regardless. This is an overpay without the benefits of waiting (what if a guy gets hurt, pushes cap hit further back because proration of SB starts a year later, etc). Plus he would have been a restricted free agent after the year, not an unrestricted free agent.

I'm very happy to have Spann-Ford on the team for an additional 3 years so I'm not bent out of shape over this at all. But that doesn't take away from the fact that we overpaid

Yes they could have let 2026 play out and then used the restricted-free-agent system to retain him if he didn't break out. Instead, they guaranteed more than $12 million based largely on what they think he's going to become.

If Spann-Ford has a breakout 2026 season and becomes a legitimate two-way TE2, we'll look back at this as a smart preemptive extension. For now it's TBD.

I'm pretty sure you are comparing apples to oranges. Those other TE contracts you are comparing to are counting the entire contract not just the extensions. You would need to count this years for Spann-Ford to get a true comparison.

No, it's apples to apples. The contract he signed is $6M per just like Ferguson's is $12.5M per even though he had time left on his old deal as well. That's the list I'm referring to.

On a related note this idea that you add your existing contract in to determine the average to lower it and make it look more team friendly is disingenuous. That's a sunk cost and part of the prior deal. The topic and what he signed is the contract for $6M per; pending the details of course as I assume it is actually less than $6M - probably more like five plus incentives.

And I get if that you get excited, but BSFhas 18 catches for 178 yards.

If Ferguson gets so bad that BSF is TE1, then we need to be trying to trade for a new tight end.

And this is coming from someone who thinks Ferg is a fantasy football mirage who doesn’t really make a big difference for the offense

I know people probably don't think resigning BSF or FLO, or even bringing over a back lineman just before the season starts or just nothing but they are they're saying that they're still making moves whether they're small or not and I believe once they see three or four games from this team if there's a glaring hole a big move is going to be made I think they're using that money and draft pick when they need it before the trade deadline a move can be made I think Jerry's in a move making headspace and I like that even if it's small..

The contracts you were comparing to have done the same thing. It's an extension that means you join the old contract with the new one.
