When Dolphins cornerback Will Allen walked into the team's training facility Wednesday for a routine visit, his day was greeted with some welcomed news.
''They told me we had a new coach,'' Allen said. ``I'm just excited to get moving. That's it.''
Allen's simple sentiment might have properly put into perspective the precise feeling that was resonating through Dolphins camp Wednesday following Miami's introduction of Tony Sparano as its fifth head coach in as many years.
Time to put last season in the past. And time to hope this next coach can do something each of the past few couldn't: Get the Dolphins to the playoffs.
''I don't really care what happened in the past,'' Sparano said, who signed a four-year deal worth just under $11 million. ``I'm not afraid of challenges. I look forward to them.''
However, Sparano would make no promises about the future. He would not set out a timetable for success, refusing to walk the thin line of setting high expectations or exciting a fan base.
''I can't make any promises about anything,'' Sparano said. ``I'm here because I want to be and I believe I can handle the job and get this team to where it needs to be. I can't worry about what's happened in the past.''
Instead, the no-nonsense coach wants only to do what he was brought here for.
''There are no promises, there are no commitments, there are none of those things right now,'' Sparano said. ``That's not what I do. I coach. I'm here to coach this football team, to help them get better, to help them improve in any way I can and develop our young players, to do all the things that I believe in and that I know Jeff and Coach [Bill] Parcells believe in as well.''
Sparano's hiring puts the finishing touches on a new trifecta of power in Miami, which also includes vice president of football operations Parcells and general manager Jeff Ireland.
Owner Wayne Huizenga, who has invested millions in this fresh start just one year after initially hiring former coach Cam Cameron, now hopes his money will finally get the Dolphins back on a track toward success that the organization hasn't felt in years.
Sparano will begin assembling his staff immediately. He said he does not anticipate attending next week's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., where scouts and coaches typically assemble. Instead, Sparano will stay home to hire assistants.
Look for Sparano to soon contact Cowboys secondary coach Todd Bowles and Cowboys linebackers coach Paul Pasqualoni (both who have expiring contracts in Dallas) about joining his new staff in Miami.
Sparano, an offensive mind who called plays in Dallas two years ago, also said he was unsure whether he would be the one calling plays next season (like Cameron did last season) or whether he would delegate such responsibilities to someone on his staff.
During his news conference, Sparano noted his high respect for Parcells, whom he credited for getting him to the point where he is ready to be a head coach.
''I know Coach Parcells is here as a resource for me and I'm going to use him every way I can,'' Sparano said. ``He's been through a lot of battles. He's won a lot of battles in this league, and I respect him tremendously. He knows that. I'm going to ask as many questions as I possibly can and continue to learn.''
But Sparano also said he believes in his own ability to coach -- and although he will look toward Parcells for guidance, he will still have his own ways of doing things.
''That being said, I have a way,'' Sparano said. ``I understand that way. I know that Coach Parcells, Jeff, and Mr. Huizenga know that I understand that way, and that's the way I hope we go about it.''
