The best lines have by and large a mixture of low round/free agent picks which the tram developed over a couple of years and one or two high round picks which they could plug in quite quickly.

I would also add one or two low-mid range free agent value signings thrown in that overplays his contract. (David Baas, Dan Connolly, Jonathan Goodwin)

Which is exactly the mix that we're currently trying to establish.

Frankly I think it’s a bit of both.

One OL picked in the 1st round of the draft in 32 years (or 24 if you just count the time Jerry has been the owner) does speak to the OL being under valued.

However the main problem is one of being able to evaluate players who can play for the Cowboys.

Outside of rounds 1 & 2 (and round 1 is as small a sample size as you can get) the record is terrible.

The best lines have by and large a mixture of low round/free agent picks which the tram developed over a couple of years and one or two high round picks which they could plug in quite quickly.

True but then Callahan has been with us 1 year I think as he is allowed to put in his blocking schemes and find players to plug into this line we will see improvement. However I think some fans need to be willing to give him the chance and not act as if Callahan somehow has been part of the problem of the past.

We shall see, but you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

No you can't but often time fans will get impatient. I recall a time Mark Tuine and Nate Newton looked like crap and people wanted them gone because we had seen Aikman getting his butt kicked, hell taking 11 sacks vs Philly not to mention numerous hits after he got rid of the ball. No one in their right mind felt that OL would become great with those 2 but a couple of parts were added they developed and that team won big.

I'm not saying we don't need to add to this OL I think we clearly do I also think some of the parts are there and with the addition of 1 or 2 players along the OL and learning the scheme working as a unit 5 men playing as 1 can make a world of difference and change the views of the individual player.

I was at that game against Philly and believe me it was not pretty.

Funnily enough they replaced Tuine with Erik Williams at left tackle later on in the game. Williams was a rookie and still looked the best lineman we had that day. Talent always shines through.

However both Tuine and Newton had been on this team for quite a number of years at that stage.

In this day and age teams don't have the same ability to groom players for that length of time which is why we need to do better at talent evaluation/coaching.

and it still takes time for players and that is where good coaching and an eye for talent comes into play. I don't want to get a OL player and in 3 or 4 years watch him become the player they felt he was some where else.

I understand the cap but not all players will develop at the same rate no matter what day and age it is.

The problem is most of our OL draftees don't become players for us or anyone else.

and I don't disagree but then that goes back to BC (Before Callahan) :laugh2:

I'm one who thinks when you make key changes within a staff then you give them the time to prove themselves not hang the failure of others on him.

I do think Callahan input will carry a lot of weight in this organization when it comes to the Offensive line.
