Spencer returning to practice this week

It seems to me like not putting him on PUP potentially gets him back 4 games earlier, and that isn't done yet. If he had come back this week then it would have probably been 6 weeks earlier. Players coming off of PUP don't usually walk onto the team and immediately get starter snaps, they frequently use at least 14 of their 21 day window.

Being that Spencer is just going to be a designated pass-rusher (at first), I'm not sure how much pad on pad practice he's going to need. I'd be more concerned about his cardio and his overall muscle mass. If he's physically up to snuff he could probably just rush the passer a dozen times a game.

I still don't expect the whole Spencer experiment to have a happy ending. But man nothing would make me happier than to be wrong on this one. Not wrong for the team or selfishly for myself although that would be nice too. I'd really love to see this guy catch a break.

For all the mess in the league lately about the crappy things these athletes with an overblown sense of entitlement do, Spencer is the antithesis, a straight up class act. He orchestrates a lot of his own charity work, focusing on high school kids to help them make good decisions and focus on their educations. From some of the reading I've done on him he always seems to keep a positive vibe and his praise of others is the norm rather than the exception.

I hope his battle to continue playing the sport he loves ends well for him. He deserves it.

But if it ends up being only a matter of a week earlier, I would consider it to be a bad and unnecessary move.

If I am not mistaken Cowboys can only designate 1 player for the PUP with return at wk6 and that was given to DLAW.......In order to see them both play this year, Spencer needed to hold that active sport....Made sense to give Spencer the active roster spot even if he is not ready tell week 8....Cowboys can have both DLAW and Spencer on the field hopefully sometime in NOV

Executive vice president Stephen Jones sounded cautiously optimistic Monday on 105.3 FM “The Fan” that Spencer could be about two weeks away from playing in games for the Cowboys.

“I think that’s not unreasonable,” Jones said. “That’s certainly aggressive, but I don’t think it’s totally out of the question.”

You are a good fan, I enjoy your being about on threads...

Wow. I hope Stephen isn't teasing.

I think they are in the position they don't want to commit to when he is expected to play. They want to see what he can handle in practice and then see how he responds each day after. But yeah, would be great if they can get him out there quick as a pass rusher. I think he can give us more than Wilber.

If he had been on PUP he wouldn't have been able to practice until two weeks before he came off it. Having him on the active roster allows them to ease him into practice earlier.

Even if it is six weeks, I think it's worth it to have him practicing the whole time. He'll be in better football shape when he's back. Besides, what would they gain with his roster spot? There isn't exactly a big contributor out there they could use instead.

No offense but your sig line about trainee Garrett's spit knowing more about football than any of us is ridiculous.

Be it dumb to not just use the six week PUP window the league gives you.

I understand that and they based on the information at hand. We don't know if he will be in the lineup before the 6 weeks or not that is a guess on our part.

I didn't know that about him. Nice to hear how charitable he is.

Keep your fingers crossed as he begins making cuts. I wish him well. I will never listen to the cowboys injury reports again, they flat out lie, in fairness, most teams do.

From what I have heard Spencer has been working out on the side in pad, he will now be getting some individual drills and how much he shows will determine how much the work load will increase.
I guess we will all find out soon enough but I think he will be back in the next 2 weeks.
