Trestman isn't a first year coach. ..

And there is no way in. . .. Jg is a better coach than Trestman. .. Trestman is a stud

I am always curious how our coaches and our GMs manage to come in the bottom 10 in these rankings. I know that is what their perception is, but you'd have to think if you go 8-8 every year something has to be offset somewhere. Either a good coach is making chicken salad out of chicken crap from a mediocre roster, or a bad coach is misusing good talent. While .500 is not acceptable, I'm not sure how both can be ranked so poorly and achieve "average" results"

I don't think our talent has been terrible. It was on defense last year because of the injuries, but our talent on offense was very good -- and healthy.

2014 is when Jason will earn respect.

Who gives a flip what the "media" thinks.

Romo. Otherwise Jason is in the 3-5 win Dave Campo range.

Tomlin ahead of Harbaugh? Jim Caldwell debuting at 16? Gus Bradley at 26? I hate these sorts of lists, anyway, because I think they're simplistic and stupid, but this one's also just not a great ranking. Not that I'm surprised where they have our coach, though. It's about where I'd have expected him to go given his press.

For those that want the entire list - it is below.

1 Belichick
2 Carroll
3 Coughlin
4 Payton
5 Tomlin
6 Reid
7 John Harbaugh
8 Fox
9 Jim Harbaugh
10 McCarthy
11 Pagano
12 Mike Smith
13 Fisher
14 Lovie Smith
15 Kelly
16 Caldwell
17 Ryan
18 Lewis
19 Rivera
20 Arians
21 McCoy
22 Wisenhunt
23 Garrett
24 Marone
25 Trestman
26 Bradley
27 *O'Brien
28 Philbin
29 *Zimmer
30 *Gruden
31 *Pettine
32 Allen

I added my rankings and segregated into 4 quadrants with resoning:

TOP SHELF and SB Winners
1 Belichick - 3 SB wins, 5 appearances, 12 playoffs in 19 seasons, .655 Career winning %, .679 winning % in playoffs, hard to argue
2 Payton - 1 SB win, No argument, personal favorite younger coach; .652 Winning %, 6 Playoffs in 8 years.
3 Carroll - 1 SB win, has done a good job in turning around Seattle in his 4 years, found a QB and won with him immediately
4 Jim Harbaugh - 1 SB appearance, 3 straight NFCE Conf games in 3 years; .760 Winning %; .625 Winning % in Playoffs
5 John Harbaugh - 1SB win, .653 Winning %, playoffs in 5-6 years, no argument
6 McCarthy - 1 SB win, Aggressive coach, seems to adjust well in games. .645 Winning%, 6 Playoffs in 8 years
7 Coughlin - 2 SB wins, .549 Carrer winning %, .632 winning % in playoffs. 9 Playoffs in 18 years
8 Tomlin - 1 SB win - another appearance, Always has Pittsburg in it even with an aging team. .634 Winning %
On the cusp - very good coaches with nice winning %
9 Arians - My way underrated coach. Took Indy 9-3 after Pagano has medical leave in 2012 and Took a Carson Palmer team to 10-6 in the NFC West in 2013 - Wow.
10 Reid - 1 SB appearance, Turned around KC and took Philly to multiple NFCE championships. 10 playoffs in 15 years
11 Pagano - Good coach of a young team. Won division in first full coaching year
12 Kelly - First year wins the division, innovative and translated college success to immediate NFL success. 12 is due to potential
13 Fox - 2 SB appearances, .557 Winning %, 6 playoffs in 12 seasons, took Tim Tebow Team to playoffs and 1 win.
14 Rivera - Improved each of his 3 years in wins, inherited a 2-14 team and went 12-4 last year.
15 Mike Smith - Im assuming 2013 was a fluke. Even with a 4-12 record, career winning % is STILL .625. 4 Playoff appearances in 6 years, other missed season was 9-7
16 Fisher - 1 SB appearnace, .532 winning %, Only 6 playoffs in 19 season. I cant help but think Bud Adams (i.e. V Young, cheap) played a part. Now plays in NFCW

Meh
17 Lovie Smith - .563 Winning %, but only 3 Playoffs in 9 seasons, always seemed to be on the hot seat, enigma
18 Ryan - .519 Winning %, 2 AFCE Championships in first 2 years. Lack of QB plays a role
19 Lewis - 5 playoffs in 11 seasons. 3 straight. I think he has underachieved to a degree, but the Mike Brown factor is real
20 Wisenhunt - 1 SB appearance, didn't have a winning season after K Warner retired.
21 Garrett - .518 Winning % (though 5-3 interim record is only >500 due to a Philly final game give-up). Top 10 QB and no playoffs. Has had imprint on team since 2007
22 Caldwell - .542 Winning %, but in only year without Peyton Manning went 2-14.
23 Philbin - inherited a 6-10 team and improved 1 win in each of first 2 years. Lower due to handling of Martin, Incognito incident
24 Allen - Raiders. Probably the closest guy to Garrett

Too Early to Tell

25 McCoy - 9- 7 in first year with a playoff appearance
26 Trestman - 8-8,
27 Marrone - 6-10; Lost EJ Manuel for 7 games.
28 Bradley - 4-12, but No QB, No WR, etc.
29 *O'Brien
30 *Zimmer
31 *Gruden
32 *Pettine

I put Kelly in the main list since he won the division and really brought HIS offense to the NFL and took Philly from 4th to 1st. I only have Garrett over 3 coaches

I would also argue some of those rankings but JG being in the bottom 3rd seems about right. Now of course you can argue that having Jerruh as the GM is a huge debit so just how much is his fault? Game Day management clearly is NOT a Red Ball strength; which would be a critical factor in judging any HC. On the other hand he seems to also act at least partially in areas normally preserved for the GM so that is a plus for him that might not factor in the rankings. Of course assuming that what he is doing in that area is positive.

Too early to tell about Kelly. I like him. I like Foles. I'm just not ready to judge either one....yet. Reid should be in the top third. Coughlin is just a good coach. He's in the middle third IMO. Garrett is in the lower third at present. He has two to three years to prove otherwise unless the team takes a nosedive. That statement should drive some conversation. :)

Now this is a good post; fair and balanced.

(cough he's ranked 23 cough)

but snark on.

Who cares if he's ranked 23rd or 32nd? It's still not where we'd want our head coach to be. What makes 23rd especially bad is that 5 of the 9 coaches ranked below him haven't been head coaches yet.

Call me IGS or whatever you call people around here, but the guy has one of the best QBs in the league (in my opinion top 10), and he can't get us into the playoffs. We lose games like the Detroit game about twice a year. Give it a year and some of these first year HC's will probably move in front of our awesome HC.
