I still consider it's the players more than the scheme but you can't ignore the latter. The only thing that may change is more push up the middle and that takes a special player. The other is dialing up the blitzes but I'm not certain now is the time for that. I'd wait for the back 7 to get better before pushing the blitz packages.
Marinelli has not had the type if players he prefers.
He had to play a lot of man defense in past year because he was stuck with players like Carr and Claiborne.
Now he has CBs more like he prefers but they are super young and/or injured.
A close look at what has transpired with the defensive roster and it's surprising they've even been competitive.
Lewis - Rookie that missed preseason.
Woods - A safety that had to play slot CB in 2 games.
Jaylon - Terrible
Lee/Hitchen - Never played in a game together.
Durant - Pseudo retired then on NFI all preseason.
Frazier - Played significant snaps but none last season.
Brown - 2nd season, now surrounded by inexperienced players.
Heath - 1st time starter.
Irving - Missed 4 games.
Moore - Missed 2 games.
Paea - Bad knee, now gone.
Price - Inexperienced, came from 3-4 team.
Carroll - Projected starter, now gone.
Thorton - Cut before the season.
Awuzie - Injured.
Taco - Slow start like most rookie DEs.
Collins - Has had to take on too many double teams due to 1-tech issues. Has has had to play 1-tech at times.
Scandrick - Looks better than last season but now the #3 CB and looks stiff.
Jones - Now the more experienced guy in his 2nd year as starting FS.
The good news is that they might be past many of these issues.
Lee/Hitchens - Should be back together.
Woods - Not having to play CB.
Rookies have now gotten their feet wet and have had a chance to catch their breath on the bye week.
Awuzie - ? Healthy.
Heath - Woods/Frazier/Awuzie being phased in more and more.
Irving - Returned.
Moore - Returned.
Price - Has now had some time in this scheme.
Carroll - Not taking up a roster spot.
Jaylon - Hopefully not playing or minimal snaps.
