I was very excited when we signed Henson. Visions of Aikman were dancing in my head. Like most people, I greedily swallowed the "He started ahead of Tom Brady!" line, completely ignoring the years of rust that had built up. I've never seen a QB have more trouble taking a snap and backpedaling quickly. Something like that should be simple, but he just couldn't pull it off. I sometimes wonder who would be the starting QB today had we not taken a flier on Tony. Maybe we would have beaten New Orleans to the punch for Brees.
...our provincial team tryouts for elite players 19 and under. I talked to the QB coach about how he could make assessments on the candidates in a relatively short period of time.
He said easy just watch.
He ran side by side drills of the QBs throwing the exact same pattern as he called out the cadence.
He ran those same sets of plays with two blockers and three pass rushers to simulate an overload. He switched WRs to make sure that the QBs had a chance to throw to the same sets of pass catchers.
Mirror drills lets you see the deficiency in relation to another candidate.
Is he too late coming out of his stance? What is his footwork like? How quick is his release? Where is his release point? How does he carry himself in practice? Is he competitive?
I'm confident the Cowboys took the time in practice to find out what they had in Henson. I'm sure Payton knew what Henson was. Parcells probably had a strong opinion.
I didn't hear in the media that Henson was denied opportunities in training camp or practices. He was certainly given opportunities to find the field in games.
In the end Henson only has Henson to ask for why he isn't a starting QB. He and his agent chose the team. He chose baseball first. We can't be apologists or even come up with reasons for why he isn't what some expected.
Maybe it's as simple as he is not capable of playing QB at the NFL level.
It's time to stop comparing Romo with Henson and the other group of ex-Cowboy QB who were part of the post Switzer and pre-Phillips era.
Romo at least has a starting NFL job.
