Cowboys’ DB coach on board with Ezekiel Elliott over Jalen Ramsey

By Drew Davison

Baker, who is going into his fifth season with the team, remembered the 2014 season when DeMarco Murray carried the offense and the Cowboys owned the time of possession. That kept the defense fresh and the hope is that Elliott provides a similar type game.

“I remember what that was like when we were running the rock and the DBs were drinking a lot of Gatorade on the sideline. I loved that,” Baker said, chuckling. “So I’m all-in. And we ended up getting two DBs who we feel like are really good additions to the secondary. So I feel like we’ve gotten better also.”

In 2014, behind Murray and a strong running game, the Cowboys ranked first in time of possession by having the ball 32:51 of the 60-minute game. Last year, they possessed it 31:07 and were 13th in the league.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Melvin Gordon underwent microfracture surgery in January.

We knew Gordon went under the knife in January, but the specifics of the operation were not reported. Microfracture surgery carries an ominous history, but several players in recent years including Travis Kelce and Vontaze Burfict have come back from the operation as good as new. The Union-Tribune reports there does not seem to be much concern in the building about Gordon's short- or long-term health, and Gordon participated in on-field drills Monday, saying there is "no question" he will be ready for training camp. Gordon's recovery will be important to watch, but there does not appear to be much cause for concern right now.

I honestly thought the defense played better then they did 2 years ago on that 12-4 team

We just didn't get those late game sacks when we had sizeable leads cause all of our games were close

You are comparing the value of RBs to other the Cowboys to the value for other NFL teams. Dallas is going back to the smash mouth, running offense that they have had so much success with. Dallas simply values the RB position more than other teams due to their offensive philosophy . I know it is not popular with some fans, but this coaching staff has all agreed that having a bell cow RB will have the most positive impact on the team compare to the other top prospects in this draft. RBBC did not work and it opened their eyes to the value that Zeke would have to the team. I have my doubts about the coaching staff, but I tend to agree with them in this case. You can't judge the value of a great RB to this offense to the value that other offenses place on the position. If Zeke has a career similar to other great RBs, he will be worth the 4th pick and more.

yes and to say you never draft a RB in 1st, is a generalization, and generalization's are all false including this one.

Some say EE is not AP, well he may be even better than AP because of his pass catching and blocking.
Plus in this draft the other talent was not all that good.

I question the 2nd pick at 34 more than EE at 4.

Or any turnovers whatsoever. That's a huge difference.

I think last years d was terrible. The numbers were a bit of a mirage imo. Teams were playing as close to the vest as possible knowing that there was really no chance of the offense scoring so there was no need to take chances. And when it got late in a game and a team needed to score to win, They scored and won EVERY single time. And the excuse of saying the D wore down because they were on the field is nonsense. In almost all of the games the time of possession was just about even or we actually had the advantage in many of them.

LOL.

Did you really think a current coach of the Cowboys was going to come out and publicly say that he didn't want Elliott?

Geez, some of you guys are naïve.

It's like someone heard the last few years that you don't draft a RB in the first round so now it is gospel.

This is getting silly now.

And next year when a few RBs go in the first round and causes other players to fall to us...people will be thankful that yes..>YES you can draft a RB in the first round instead of folllowing some idiotic rule that some idiot thought up and making it gospel.

My choice was to trade down and end up with two mid to later 1st rounders and a mid 2nd instead of one high 1st and 2nd rounder

I do think Ramsey will be good though, but his fit didn't seem perfect in Dallas for the 4th overall
Zeke should be great, so moving on.

I didn't want Ramsey simply because there was a debate about whether he was best suited to play CB or S. I know he is a very good player but at 4, I want no questions about what you're getting. I didn't trust our coaches to develop him correctly and play him in the right spot. Mo was supposed to be can't miss and they couldn't get him right so I decided I'd rather have the RB which they seem to be able to use correctly.

Yeah it's getting old. It's suppose to be a no no now because the league is into passing, and Richardson and Dmac were bust, what a joke. All of college football is into passing, but who keeps winning championships in that league? Alabama, Ohio St., etc. who all run the football!

I wanted Ramsey, but excited about Zeke because...

1. the players are both worthy of that number 4 pick, but at least Zeke is much more of a sure thing due to the team that drafted him.

2. I don't think we were going to use Ramsey correctly. Dude is a safety in the NFL but it seems like we would have forced him into corner.

3. I believe in Byron Jones to play the role I wanted Ramsey to play.
