I didn't want Ramsey simply because there was a debate about whether he was best suited to play CB or S. I know he is a very good player but at 4, I want no questions about what you're getting. I didn't trust our coaches to develop him correctly and play him in the right spot. Mo was supposed to be can't miss and they couldn't get him right so I decided I'd rather have the RB which they seem to be able to use correctly.

Beyond my recognition that Zeke without question helps the team more, Ramsey being the best db available in this draft truly isn't saying much.

Cowboys’ DB coach on board with Ezekiel Elliott over Jalen Ramsey

By Drew Davison

Baker, who is going into his fifth season with the team, remembered the 2014 season when DeMarco Murray carried the offense and the Cowboys owned the time of possession. That kept the defense fresh and the hope is that Elliott provides a similar type game.

“I remember what that was like when we were running the rock and the DBs were drinking a lot of Gatorade on the sideline. I loved that,” Baker said, chuckling. “So I’m all-in. And we ended up getting two DBs who we feel like are really good additions to the secondary. So I feel like we’ve gotten better also.”

In 2014, behind Murray and a strong running game, the Cowboys ranked first in time of possession by having the ball 32:51 of the 60-minute game. Last year, they possessed it 31:07 and were 13th in the league.

Baker on board!

I remember what it was like in 2015 when Romo was healthy... 3-1.

Elliott hasn't played a down for the 'Boys and he is already ranked as the 2nd most disliked player on the team. He surpassed Mo Claiborne as soon as the pick was announced to settle in behind Tony Romo.

Funny...

Yeah it's getting old. It's suppose to be a no no now because the league is into passing, and Richardson and Dmac were bust, what a joke. All of college football is into passing, but who keeps winning championships in that league? Alabama, Ohio St., etc. who all run the football!

It's a no no because you can find players that produce at a high level out of the first round.

I don't have a problem taking a RB in the first but when your defense is as bad as ours is I think I would take the best defensive talent and take my chances on finding a quality runner later on.

Most of the top NFL RBs are not first round picks.

You can also find high producing players out of the first round that play...OT, OG, OC, WR,TE, LB, DE, DT, CB, S and in some cases...yes...even QB.

But I guess we are not going to take those positions in the first round because someone said they can also be found in later rounds.

Just because you can find decent players in later rounds it does not mean you pass up on what the team feels like is a great player in the first round...especially passing up a player because you are drafting for NEED instead.

Teams were playing as close to the vest as possible knowing that there was really no chance of the offense scoring so there was no need to take chances.

Teams came out throwing against us more often last season than they did in 2014. In the first half of games last season, our opponents threw 59.3 percent of the time (284 total pass plays), compared with 58.0 percent in 2014 (246 pass plays). Even through three quarters, our opponents passed more times last season (400 pass plays in 2015, and 381 plays in 2014) and at only a slightly lower rate (56.8 percent in 2015, and 57.1 percent in 2014). Teams weren't extra conservative against us last season, they were exploiting our biggest weakness.

Baker on board!

What is he going to say? He would be fired otherwise if he came out publicly that he didnt like the pick.

What do the differences in offensive line have to do with a kid having microfracture surgery 1 year into his NFL career at a position that historically injuries early and wears down soon? Other than the fact that we could can get better rushing production out of a wider variety of players?

Less hits for the same yardage and also what you stated. Squaring up on DBs is quite different from having dlineman take your legs out from under you in the backfield.

People can debate all they want about THIS years first round pick and what we got or we didnt get. The fact of the matter is that going into this year the Cowboys werent going to be a true contender until the following things happened:

-They got a stud RB
-They got a stud corner
-They got a great pass rush
-They got another great LB
-They got another good safety
-Romo was healthy or we got a young QB to take over and mature

Now maybe you dont need ALL of these things, but most. We arent winning the SB this year and not next year. IF we do things correctly we may have a shot in 2018. But from where I am standing we will need to ace THIS draft, the NEXT draft, And also go out and sign a top level FA or two during that time. And romo still has to be healthy and playing well.

So what can we check off that we got in this offseason?

-Stud RB
-Another great linebacker?
-Romo healthy?

Still a long way to go. And in my opinion, the hardest things to get we didnt get this year.

So it may be nice to win some more games this year and possibly make the playoffs. But if people think were going to the SB they are dreaming.

Funny...

From what I can tell, Zeke is universally liked...even by those who would have preferred not to use the 4th overall pick on him.

So not sure what you are talking about.

You can but we aren't seeing consistent elite production from those positions out of the first round like we are at RB.

Not what I interpret when I read that a player shouldn't have been drafted where he was drafted. My opinion and I'm entitled to have my opinion.

The stud RB is for sure NOT needed .

In fact, recent SB winners with stud RBs are very rare. Lynch was paired with the best defense in the league...usually a great recipe. After that, not so many examples.

It is a luxury and I hope Dallas takes full advantage of it.

Sure you are.
And if I say water is not wet, that's my opinion too. Doesn't make it right.

Do a poll then.

Ask anyone if they dislike Zeke Elliott as a player or as a Cowboy.
Crickets

Many people flat out can't stand Mo Claiborne as a Cowboy or as a player. It's not the same thing.

Most of the top NFL RBs are not first round picks.

But generally the best one's are! Chris Johnson, AD, Tomlinson, Beastmode etc etc. I don't want one 1,600 yard season, I want multiple 1,600 yard seasons!

RBBC did not work and it opened their eyes to the value that Zeke would have to the team

I don't think anyone is insisting on a committee approach. I also don't think I've heard anyone say they dislike the player selected.

The truth is that there's some ground to stand on in both camps, whether either side chooses to acknowledge it or not. 4th IS high for a RB, but if the guy is Adrian Peterson, no one is going to care where he was taken.
