Star-Telegram: Cowboys’ DB coach on board with Ezekiel Elliott over Jalen Ramsey

Because you can get yardage from anywhere on the field, and you generally need to get to the goal line to score TDs. Granted, McFadden wasn't breaking long runs for pay dirt if that's your point. But most rushing TDs are not 20+ yard plays.

I understand your point. However, there were more than a few times we would be in the red zone or inside the five and we could never punch the ball in. There's an art to a running back making himself skinny in the hole. Emmitt Smith did this. I don't think McFadden is this type back. I believe Ezekiel Elliott is.

Be that as it may, we're talking hypotheticals because unless Romo goes down again, and we need to rely on EZ, we'll never know.

But thanks for the feedback.

And I agree overall that EE has a knack for finding the end zone.

I really am looking forward to seeing him play. I do really like his game. I just really really want to see us play good defense, and not ok defense.

Cowboys’ DB coach on board with Ezekiel Elliott over Jalen Ramsey

By Drew Davison

Baker, who is going into his fifth season with the team, remembered the 2014 season when DeMarco Murray carried the offense and the Cowboys owned the time of possession. That kept the defense fresh and the hope is that Elliott provides a similar type game.

“I remember what that was like when we were running the rock and the DBs were drinking a lot of Gatorade on the sideline. I loved that,” Baker said, chuckling. “So I’m all-in. And we ended up getting two DBs who we feel like are really good additions to the secondary. So I feel like we’ve gotten better also.”

In 2014, behind Murray and a strong running game, the Cowboys ranked first in time of possession by having the ball 32:51 of the 60-minute game. Last year, they possessed it 31:07 and were 13th in the league.

Baker on board!

There are some of us that won't budge at all. It doesn't matter how often you say "a great ground & pound offense is a major plus for the defense". The last time we had it, Demarco was in the saddle. Now, we finally have it back with Zeke.

Haters going to hate
Posters are going to debate
While we sit back and watch Zeke Infiltrate the endzone for 6

Zeke's going to HELP this offense to get bouncing again...bouncing again...bouncing again.
88 X is going to HELP this offense to get Bouncing again...bouncing again...bouncing again.
Romo is going to HELP this offense to get bouncing again...bouncing again...bouncing again.

Ear worm for you...

Zeke was not the BPA on most boards. They were on the Cowboys board because they are morons.

I don't disagree. But I also don't work in the front office to help sway these decisions.

Or any turnovers whatsoever. That's a huge difference.

I remember a lot of those turnovers came as teams were chunking the ball around trying to score points to keep up cause we controlled the clock and scored a lot

I remember Bruce "no heart" carter having 5 picks becaus of this

Maybe. Either way, they're still turnovers, and they still have a *huge* effect on defensive performance.

I think this is fair, the defense does need to improve and Zeke is a play maker.

What is interesting is that ideally you do not draft for need and instead attack these items in free agency while building through the draft.

The draft is not ideally supposed to be a quick fix for immediate team need.

The Cowboys drafted Zeke and he was certainly not a need and some bash the pick because it was not on defense, clearly being the greater need.

Yet, I am not hearing the same criticism really talked about concerning how the defensive needs, save the modest signings of Thorton/Crawford/Mayowa , were not really aggressively addressed in free agency.

The Cowboys are apparently content with their free agency signings but ultimately they decided to go BPA at #4 on their board and defense on their following three picks.

I think if we are being critical of the one pick, we may need to look at the entire approach to upgrading the defense in the off season.

Im with you though... We dont have a playmaker in the back end that scares teams... Maybe Byron can do that but I feel like we just have solid coverage guys

And truthfully Im wanting to see more of pass hurrys and sacks this year.... Its annoying to see the opposing QB have all day and go through all of his reads with barley a shuffle of the feet
