Star-Telegram - Surprise!!
RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS
Running back Marion Barber
Contrary to earlier reports, the Cowboys will give Barber a first-round tender at $2.017 million, which would net them a first-round pick if he goes to another team, rather than the high tender of $2.56 million, which would have returned a first- and third-round pick.

It is almost like we are dangeling (sp?) the bait for other teams to give us the #1......wow!

Someone stab me in the face, Jerry is screwing us up hard. First the large contract to crayton (definately don't agree with) then wasting cash on the Zack Thomas debacle, now this.

We still don't have Canty signed, let alone barber or JJ (We need a back, especially now that someone will potentially bite on this tender.) Ellis will be paid less than Zack Thomas and will start up again (Rightfully so IMHO) Next season we have to lay out contracts to hamlin now as well as Newman and Ware ... Our support players like Reeves, Jones and even Killer Keith ARE expendable for the most part .. but we are taking a mighty risk when playing with our LT/RG spots.

And all among this, no one is mentioning how tight we are to the cap, we are running out of precious $$ to spend toward keeping our team together let alone FA or emergency in season needs (think of last year when Fergy went down, we had tank flying in THAT NIGHT)

I KNOW people are going to say Well zack only will cost us 1-2 - 3 million dollars based on incentives! But that could have gone a long way to help pay for any of those prior contracts listed above in terms of an up front signing bonus .... IT just seems like a luxury we didn't need or could realistically afford right now .. what was the big rush, it wasn't like he had to decide immediately who to sign with.

So if Barber gets traded to another team and Julius does not sign does that mean the boys will have nothing but rookies playing RB?

My thoughts exactly. Goodness... sometimes I wish it was the 90s again where Jerry wasn't the GM. We better not lose Barber.

What team would be willing to give up a 1st?
Seriously.

Not knocking Barber, but with this draft class of running backs, why do that?

Depending on who it is this might be a great thing for us. It would give us 3 first rd picks- and this one would almost have to be better then the ones we have now. There are a lot of good backs that could be had in the late second or third rd; and this would allow us to get 2 CBs high and maybe even a WR. WHile he has not been THE back for a whole year, MB3 has certainly proven that he is a top 10 back.

YES, or it means we have to pull someone CHEAP off the scrap heap.

Btw .. does anyone actually SEE our cap room, how would we have the room to sign any of these guys after taking the Tag for Hamlin in account, the tender to canty, the signing of our picks (with 2 first rounders, let alone 3 or a Single HIGH first...) We are cutting this way too close. Especially when we will have to lose between 1-3 million dollars if we are letting go Akin OR Carp.:bang2::bang2::bang2:

There's no reason to even RISK losing barber over 500k.. so why?

Wow, that's a questionable move. I guess we still have the option to match any offer, but a team could include a "poison pill" that we just couldn't match. If we end up getting like the 25th pick from Seattle I will be absolutely livid. I guess the hope is that if a top 10 team make an offer then we'll let Barber walk, but if it's a lower round pick like Seattle then we'll just match. This is just bad news waiting to happen if you ask me.

The fact that the difference between the tenders is so small shows this is clearly a move in order to see what we could get in return as opposed to a money saving move. Man, this has me worried. Jerry's RB "surprise" begins to unfold.

The poison pill has been removed by the league office= that is not a worry. It cannot happen again like it did with Hutchinson.

This is a ridiculous move....I mean you are saving pennies and if a team wanted Barber bad enough they would cough up the extra third rounder.

Really? Whew, I remember hearing stories about the league talking about removing poison pills but I never heard anything final on it. That's good news. I'm more calm now.

i agree it is an odd move but i think jj gets mb3 locked up long term and this is all a moot issue.

How about spinning this that Marion is asking for a contract that is larger then he is worth. I am a homer, but Marion isn't worht a 1st and 3rd. He just isn't. Smart business move by Jerry IMHO.

We aren't getting a first and a third. We didn't give him the "highest" tender that's what the point is. We gave him the "first round tender" at only a first can lock him. There were murmurings before about potential teams trying to get leverage for the 1st and 3rd .. if any of them were remotely true, we might have a problem.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is I'll take a 1st for Marion and let some other team sign him to big money.
