Wow, this is just crazy. A year ago to the day, I ruptured my patella tendon. I really feel for him. It is a long and difficult recovery. It is worse than an ACL. For two months the knee has to be in a brace (yes, sleep with it too) and you are unable to weight bear for two months. PT generally starts 3 weeks after surgery. Then the pain begins. Essentially, the next step is the bend the knee and hope to get it back to a greater than 90 degree bend.
I didn't start walking until Dec. The biggest issues is ROM and getting the strength back in the quad. You lose a ton of muscle in the quad and to this date, I'm still working that. Good thing for him he is young. I believe that Willams (RB) on our practice squad had the same injury. He should recover. It is little bit tougher for me since I'm an over the hill DII receiver that is 41.
What is interesting is that I know he has battled with tendonitis in the knee. I had tendonitis in my knee for several years and essentially it weakend the patella tendon. My injury occured after I did something stupid. Coaching my sons football team, the kids were warming up. I decided that it would be fun to touch the goal post. I jumped and did it once, and felt great, but decided to do it one my time. On the jump, the patella tendon snapped.
I wish him luck. He has a tough battle ahead not only with recovery, but making an NFL roster after this injury......
