Now let's start a 10+ page thread where half the people say Jones is a cheap ******* who overvalues what he has on the team and the other half saying he's going to be a stupid idiot and overpay for players just to try to get Romo a ring.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Sounds to me that he is going conservative in free agency. I don't see anything there about how he views what is on the team and talent on it now.

I think the mid level FA have worked well, unfortunately top FA will cost big money and so often they do not live up to the payday.

I was about to start a thread on this recently. Will we wait out the storm like the past couple of years and let the flurry die down, or will we go in hard at the beginning?

I can only take so much of the Selvies, and no names anymore. This team needs talent! If you have to pay, you have to pay!

FWIW I read yesterday the Rams are making their FA corners a priority and now have the cap space to do it.

They are lining up to pay for Trumaine Johnson and Mark Barron for sure. Possibly Janoris Jenkins as well.

I think (and hope) that this opinion is shared around many front offices in the league. Year after year a couple of free agents have gotten paid huge amounts and then went on to underperform the contract.
Suh was a big one. The eagles paid Maxwell way too much, ect.

The idea is to pay for future production over past performance...this is why we let Murray walk.
This thinking leaves many big named free agents off the radar. I can see an exception for Lamar Miller since he is 24 and has barely played....however the other side of the argument says he is a RB and any production he gives can be closely replaced for less money in the draft.

I don't see us making a splash in free agency this year. This could be the year that Jerry sells us on his idea that we would have been a SB team last year if Romo and Dez stayed healthy.

The key would be to go after guys who can replace the subpar players (Wilcox, Hayden, Wilber, etc.) on the roster. They should not have to break the bank for those types of players.

He basically said "you never know".

A tad different from last two years where they basically shot down any idea of a free agency splurge. Regardless, I think they are open to the possibility of spending some money this year but they just don't know who will be available at what price.

Going to be interesting......... if they made some key FA signings, one might then guess they could go QB in the first round. But if they play it real safe in free agency, some might conclude that means they have no intention of drafting a QB early and instead are looking to get those impact players to put around Romo from the draft.

And....like every year....let's talk about what they said and what it means, and then we can talk about how nothing that anyone says about FA or the draft means anything since only an idiot would ever announce his real plans to the entire NFL world before FA and the draft.

That's a good observation.

Andrew Gachtar is a good example of that. I think I still would extend myself a little bit for Weddle, maybe D line. Sometimes the right fit at the right time can really work out and we don't need an All Pro at safety - we need somebody who is solid.

Only on Carr really.

There has been more than that historically.

Hardy was over-paid, IMO for the results.

A couple of O-Linemen in the earyl 2000's. (One was from Greenbay I think.....bum back.)

Marcellus Wiley.

I include stupid trades as well.........Rocket Ismail, for one.

There's been more...........

I think you will continue to see the rise in FA, especially after the Bronco's winning it all and how active they have been in FA over the last few years. I think we are going to see some crazy contracts next month.

I agree, I think Weddle can be had at a fair price. I don't expect him to get a payday you would hand out to a player in the prime of his career he is on the downhill side of it and the contract should reflect that.

The only reason Brandon Carr got the contract that he got was because Fisher and the Rams set the market for cb's that year by giving Courtland Finnegan a big contract. It's fine if you don't want to spend big money in free agency, but the Cowboys better hit on at least 4 draft picks this year to make up for it.
