So it's not a strength?
LOL, good one
A year late and a win short. A typical Jones diagnosis.
Before the season, you didn't think our front 7 would have been formidable with Ware, Hatcher, Ratliff, Spencer starting and Crawford & Bass as two reserves?
Nobody saw coming what Ratliff did, nobody could see coming that Spencer, Crawford, and Bass would get hurt...
Our front seven wasn't our main concern with those guys there, who were supposed to be there all year. Our O-Line was what everyone was concerned about..
Gimme a break...
Yes, because of these reasons:
1. Spencer had only produced 1.5 seasons in his career.
2. Ware had been injured and is over 30.
3. Ratliff had been injured for 2 years and is over 30.
4. Hatcher had only started 1 year and is over 30.
5. Crawford was a total unknown
6. Ben Bass is a dime a dozen type of guy.
#1. Spencer was just breaking out becoming a major presence in the pass rush, and was ALWAYS a very very good run defender. you making a guy, who was a pro bowler sound like a JAG is pretty interesting..
#2. Ware said all pre-season that he was the healthiest he was in the past 3 years.
#3. Yes, Jay was hurt for 2 years but led on to the Cowboys brass that he would be ready during the season. He was in TC for crying out loud...if he was hurt so bad, why was he there..
#4. Hatcher was always a solid dlineman. Show me a team that has pro bowlers at every position of their d-line. And when given the chance, look what he did this year...
#5. I can show you multiple sources that stated that crawford was due for his breakout season. That is what you look for in a reserve.
#6. Bass might be a dime a dozen kind of guy but also showed better than any of the guys we pulled off the street save Selvie.
And if im not mistaken, JJ never said the d line was a strong part of the team for the future. He was talking about this year alone.

Spencer was an injury replacement for Clay Matthews. Tying up over 10 million dollars on him for 1 season, when guys like Osi, Avril, Bennett, Freeney, etc were getting 1 year deals for less than half that was just moronic. The fact that he only played in part of a game sucked, but it was a dumb move.
If Baltimore wins the flip and Clowney is on the board, they'll draft him. He plays with the tenacity and aggression of a Baltimore defensive player.
So the guy says something the entire board has asked for and he is mocked. The team had a great D-line going into the season with some serious depth. Spencer - Hatcher- Ratliff- Ware - Bass - Crawford. 4 of these guys never played more than 2 games for the cowboys. No matter how deep you are you can't cover those injuries.
Clowney will not make it out of the top 3-5 unless he is caught with a van full of narcotics.

Don't normally play the point/counterpoint game but why not…
This is how I saw it going into the draft as did many others on this board. The rebuilding of the d-line should have started two years ago as most of us would have preferred.
- Spencer - He was fast approaching 30 and it was rumored that he was having trouble with his knee before OTAs. Red flag.
- Ware - Had major surgery on his shoulder and has a history of stingers as well as a bum elbow. He is/was already on the wrong side of 30. Huge red flag.
- Ratliff - Injured, disgruntled, delusional, irresponsible (drinking), and also on the wrong side of 30. Incredibly major red flags.
- Hatcher - Solid player who was also on the wrong side of 30. Yellow flag.
- Crawford - Unknown but showed potential before the injury. Yellow flag.
- Bass - Unknown but also showed potential even though he missed the previous season due to injury. Yellow flag.
I never said the rebuilding shouldn't have started. I am saying that d-line was not a weakness at the start of the season FOR THIS SEASON, which was the season that JJ was talking about.
And with those 6 guys who were all supposedly ready to play at the start of the season playing, it wasn't a weakness at all, for this season.
Nope, not a weakness. A huge concern, yes, but definitely not a weakness.
