Stephen Jones says Cowboys won't pass on franchise QB at No. 4

After dealing with a woeful backup quarterback carousel for most of the 2015 season, there has been speculation that the Dallas Cowboys could select a quarterback with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

On Tuesday, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones confirmed that the team will not pass on the quarterback position with their first-round pick if he has the potential to be a franchise player.

"I mean you have to look at it," Jones said. "You’re not naive to it but if you have the opportunity in this league, in our situation, to get a potential franchise quarterback, then you have to make the investment. You have to have the patience. You sacrifice maybe that opportunity that maybe is impactful right now."

The Dallas Cowboys are in a unique position this offseason with a top 5 pick.

On one hand, they already have a franchise quarterback in place and the last time Tony Romo was healthy, the Cowboys won the NFC East with a 12-4 record in 2014. At No. 4, they will have their pick of several players with potential to help the team immediately.

On the other, the Cowboys may not find themselves in this draft position again with Romo at the helm. Dallas won just four games in 2015 -- its lowest total since 1989.

The Cowboys have needs at defensive end, cornerback, linebacker and running back, and they will have their choice at a premium player at any of those positions with their first pick. However, it certainly sounds like the Cowboys will strongly consider bypassing their present needs to find a potential successor for Romo...

Well, blokes, with a pick this early it's likely not a diversionary move.
Yet the phrase "to get a potential franchise quarterback" could mean that, unless the QB is a can't-miss athlete, the Cowboys will be looking for something else, maybe for the defense.
Tricky this Stephen and his wordage . . . .

COULD draft. Basically they have an easy out when they bail...."none of the three were franchise QBs to us"

There will be a lot of pressure this draft. Say they skip the QB and use that excuse. Talking heads will be coming back to this for years now. Always comparing who we didn't take (QB wise) and what they have gone on to do.
This happens every year, we/I do it as well. But this year will be scrutinized like no other.
Boy, I hope they don't --ck it up, one way or the other .... That's why they make the big bucks, to make these tough decisions !

If, but that if could generate another team to panic and move up. Cowboys could make out pretty good in a trade

But would a team not try to get in front of us in that scenario and make a trade with a team before the Cowboys would be able to pick a QB with their pick ???

It means they would draft a QB who might have to sit on the bench for a couple years if they feel he might be a franchise QB down the line instead of the mythical immediate impact defensive player like Jack or Bosa or Ramsey some are hollering for (ignoring the fact most rookie defenders don't contribute much their first year - at least not at a high level).

So if a QB is available at #4 that the Cowboys think might turn out to be a franchise QB, that will be the pick over anything else. Personally, glad to hear it.

yes I think it is the smart move, and he could also be the #2 qb. no need for a vet.

Doesn't say that they will take either Goff or Wentz if available at #4.

That's all I need to hear to know QB isn't a real option at #4.
Fishing for possible trade offers.

Could very well be right - Personally I sure hope it's not. I hate the thought of multiple years going by without any real hope because we keep trotting out the Weedens and Cassells of the football world instead of getting one of the two top QBs in this year's draft.
