Stephen McGee competition?

Isnt the bigger question here a guy to groom as number two or future starter, if McGee peaks as a backup? Kitna aproaching Social Security age.

That would be the point of bringing in competition for McGee .......

I don't think much of McGee but he showed some things.

Definitely looked better than he did in the preseason so I think you hang on to him and see if he can continue to improve.

I think he has one more year to step up. He doesn't have to prove to be starter caliber, but he does have to prove at least that he can become an outstanding backup - hopefully still with the potential to become a starter. IF we are sitting here after the 2011 season saying "he showed a few things" and that's about the extent of the praise, then he will be gone.

Dallas will bring in another QB. I don't think anyone doubts that. They usually have 4 QBs during training camp. The question is how much do you spend to bring in another QB? Do you use a 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th round pick? Do you pick up a UDFA? Do you pick up a FA who has NFL experience?

I don't see Dallas using anything higher than 5th round draft pick on a QB at this time. I have no problems with that. You can find someone to provide competition with McGee in the later rounds or free agency. This will be McGee's 3rd year, which I think will be his make or break year. If he makes it, then Dallas may be set. If not, then in 2012 Dallas will focus on bringing in an eventual replacement for Romo.

One or two of those QB's in TC are ususally just bodies to throw passes in practice, and not guys brought in to compete. Nevertheless, I have no problem if the bring in an UDFA that might have a chance to compete with McGee, and I don't even mind if they use a 6th or 7th rond draft chocie if they think someone is worthy, but any effort beyond that is too much at this point.

I took a closer look at that final Philly game last year and I noticed a couple of things about our third string QB.

The kid obviously is very gutsy. I liked the way he continually stood tall in the pocket under pressure. He also had a good feeling for the first down marker when ever he had to take off running.

The thing that worried me the most was his accuracy. He repeatedly through passes behind the reciever or had his passes sail on him.

Now this guy was known for his running skills in college due to the style of the offense he was in. I can't find too much on him now coming out of college. Did he have a reputation as an accurate passer?

I like the kid but purhaps bringing in a QB in the 5th or 6th rounds might be prudent for training camp if we have one this year.

I was McGee's biggest critic last year. After seeing his, yes, gutsy play last year I am of the onion that if he is underthrowing and fluttering, that is mechanics. It is not like he is a Quincy who had to work on the basics and was indulging in who knows what off the field. The coaches can help McGee's mechanics and by all accounts, he has the ideal QB physical stature and strength that a young QB needs.
I say keep this young man and work with him. Romo, as much as I like him, will have his share of hits and miscues and McGee will need to step in. Kitna is not the answer because of his age and wear and tear.

We really need a QB in the draft to build toward the future, albeit in the 3rd found if a quality prospect is found.

No charges filed against ex-USC backup quarterback Mitch Mustain

Mustain, 22, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of a felony for allegedly selling Adderall, an amphetamine, to an undercover officer. But county prosecutors said they would not move forward with a felony prosecution because the substance sold to the undercover officer was "lisdexamfetamine dimesylate," which is not listed as a controlled
substance.

"Given that Mustain has no record and that this is his first contact with law enforcement, it is appropriate that it be referred to the city attorney’s office for misdemeanor consideration," officials wrote.

I really do believe that if it were not for his arrest on suspicion of selling prescription narcotics in February, Mustain would have been drafted. However, it now looks like he’ll need to go the free agent route. But, the guy does have some tools that are worth taking a shot on. Mustain is a winner; he’s comfortable in a pro style system and displays very good accuracy/ball placement on all areas of the field. He won’t be a fit for every scheme as he lacks a great arm, but he strikes me as a guy who could handle an NFL offense early in his NFL career and earn a job as a number three initially

He brought the team back from behind in 3 different games last year; Miami in preseason, Arizona and Philly. It was a shame we lost that Arizona game. His throw to Austin was incredible.

and he brought us "back" because his play early sucked

Yea Im not burning a draft pick on a camp arm.

Rudy Carpenter would suffice

thats why you bring Mitch Mustain in as UDFA

QB Mitch Mustain USC 6-3 #220 rd 5-6
Mitch Mustain began his career at Ark and had a successful freshman season compiling an impressive 8-0 record as a starter in 2006. Mustain has a strong arm, above-average accuracy and made good decisions with the ball this spring while pushing Sanchez for the starting job

Former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez: "He has a great arm. He can throw the ball through a brick wall.

Strong arm, as he's able to throw all the routes. Zip on his throws

Mitch, enough is enough! There is a reason you were never a starter after 8 games your freshman year.

So, just because he wasn't charged you're okay with bringing him in?

I get the impression it wouldn't have mattered if he was charged......you'd still be in favor of bringing him in.

And for the record, that drug is a controlled substance.

Mustain was arrested last month on a felony narcotics charge of selling prescription drugs after allegedly selling a substance he passed off as Adderall to an undercover officer. But the substance sold was lisdexamfetamine dimesylate, similar to Adderall but not a controlled substance and thus not punishable as a felony

now who am I to believe you or the numberous newspapers reports
