I believe Kitna has a two year contract. McGee needs to be ready to replace him as the first backup in his third year. That gives him two years of clipboard holding and off season workouts to prepare. If he's not ready by year 3 then the Cowboys will sign another veteran to backup Romo.

It doesn't matter how bad or how good McGee looks in these preseaon games. We need to wait till next year to see if there's any potiential.

I think he will be ready to be the back up by year 3 but we wouldn't want to see him as the starter for a long period of time.

He's got the physical tools and the head on his shoulders to be successful.

I was worried about losing a 4th round pick to another team, but we can sneak this guy through to the PS no problem. He can't make anyone's 53.

A young, smart, mobile QB w/ a strong arm? I believe he would.

People giving up on him after 1 game... :lmao2:

No QB, rookie or otherwise is going to look good behind the line McGee played on Thursday

I don't know what you're talking about. I'm ready to promote him to starting QB. Hell, I didn't see him fumble or throw an INT!

Teams that don't have a developmental qb would be all over him. The Cowboys weren't the only ones that liked him in the 4th round.

Longtime lurker here.

I will preface my comments that I am an A&M Season ticket hold for 10 years. So I likely will have some bias.

I agree that he has some of the physical tools in order to be an NFL QB.

I also think that he has the intangibles to be successful -- a) the kids obviously isnt afraid to take a hit, b) he seems to be very coachable going from a pass heavy offense in High School, to a Option based offense at A&M, c) aggie jokes aside, he seems to be intelligent / hard working given that he finished his undergrad degree (Business) and was working on a Masters degree his last year at A&M, & d) the competitive FIRE, you notice how when he was getting drilled by DL or LB he was popping back up talking smack.

While I agree that he didnt chunk the rock in college, i think that most (if not all) of this blame is at the feet of Coach Fran.

I personally think that McGee is in the perfect situation, Romo is definitely the starter. He can learn over the next 2 - 3 years developing under the radar. When you factor in Carson Palmers comment regarding Kitna, I think he may have a great mentor.

please be careful posting informed, well thought out and nicely presented
posts here...you may start a trend.

The Giants have Eli, Carr, Bhomar and Woodson. The Bills have Edwards and Fitzpatrick I believe. So not there, but look at the QB depth around the league. Mcgee is an asset. Im thinking 10-12 teams would take him. Hell, Carolina snatched up Moore and he was an UFA.

Fred Robbins will likely be cut with the accusition of Canty and burgess..I woudn't mind signing him as Ratliff's backup

The biggest problem with this organization is that it never drafts Qb's or receivers early in drafts, and as soon as Dallas finally clued in and finally drafted a QB to develope, you want to trade that QB away...No thanks

If we cut a player, with the intent of signing him to the PS, does a team have to sign him to their active 53, or can they sign him to their PS.

Or is it up to the player which PS he wants to sign for?

Players that qualify for signing to a practice squad 24 hours after the final cuts are made. In that 24 hour period after their release, if they qualify for a practice squad, they can sign with any team, but if a player is signed off another teams practice squad, they have to be placed on the 53 man roster for the year, and not to another teams practice squad

One of the earlier posters beat me to the punch (in a funny pictorial kind of way). Long time fans have criticized the Cowboys for not developing young QB talent as backups. And no, I'm not talking about Drew Henson, or any other prior project. I'm talking about fresh talent straight from college. So now, we draft one, only to have criticism flung around.

Sure, Romo is one example, and it turned out well. You build and mold QBs through the draft, and it is the most difficult position to evaluate. Draft status is almost meaningless for the QB position unless you have sure locks, but how often does that happen? Keep in mind that hindsight is 20/20.

Give the kid a chance to practice, watch, and learn. If our scouting department did their homework, he should be a suitable backup in a couple of years. No one is claiming that he should see the field right now.

So.... McGee, if released, can sign with Dallas or any other team after 24 hours, doesn't matter if the team intends to sign to active 53 or PS?

Funny but I didn't want a QB. Developing a QB is the least of our worries.

We need immediate help at:

#2 NT
#2 Tackle
#2 C
#2 Guard
#2 ILB

Maybe in a few years. Barring some crazy injury to Romo, heaven forbid, this dude will prob sign with someone else if he is any good.

You can't keep a backup around for 5+ years unless he Garrett.

I think Dallas drafted McGee for the sole reason to groom a QB for the future. It would make no sense cutting him in hopes of bringing him back which is unlikely to happen if he hits the open market.

Romo will be Dallas QB for sometime now hopefully. Basically I think we are grooming a QB for someone else b/c its 2 early for grooming the next guy when your team has more glaring needs.

I hope Romo is here for a good long time but time goes by quickly and you never know. If in the end McGee develops into a good QB Dallas could trade him for more than we gave up in the draft or should something happen with Romo we could have a legit option to turn to. All to often Dallas has been caught with the pants down in terms of having a QB to turn to when the unexpected happens and it is hard to find decent QB's. Pats had no issue groom a QB behind Brady and in the end even though Cassel was traded NE benifted, many others have done the same.
