Smith to the Cowboys?

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley
I have a call into my esteemed NFC South blog colleague Pat Yasinskas about the status of wide receiver Steve Smith, who has been suspended for the first two regular-season games for punching teammate Ken Lucas in the face during training camp.
There have been rumblings out of Panthers camp that club officials are fed up with Smith's actions (not just the latest incident) and are at least considering the idea of dealing him to another team.
The idea of trading one of the best receivers in football seems far-fetched, but Smith has become a divisive force on the team. One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn't discipline Smith, they would. This isn't exactly the best way to begin a season.
All that to say that I know an owner in the NFC East who has spent the last four months coveting another star wide receiver. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones struckout with Chad Johnson, the Lions' Roy Williams and Anquan Boldin, but behind closed doors, he's still pining away for someone to play opposite Terrell Owens.
This roster already includes T.O., Tank Johnson and Adam Jones. What's one more player with a few dings on his resume? You think I'm reaching on this one?
Well, I just talked to someone in Oxnard, Calif., site of Cowboys training training camp, and Smith's name has already come up in conversations. But something tells me we won't see this discussion on HBO's "Hard Knocks" on Wednesday.
I'll talk to Yasinskas and we'll get back to you soon.

It is a little beneath Mosley to rumor-monger.

Man, as much as I want Roy Williams, Steve Smith opposite TO stretching the field would be ill.

Ok....interesting.

Not sure what to think here.

On the one hand, we've done a great job with reclaimation projects. TO is a major success story.

On the other hand, it seems like adding another volatile personality is asking for trouble.

Smith and Newman have a bit of a histroy already. I would hate to see this guy come in and ruin what appears to be great chemistry.

Football-wise....it'd be durn near impossible to defend us.

I'm going to say there's virtually no chance of this happening.

He is not my favorite WR because of his size but he does produce and stays dangerous. I would be a little concerned about him being able to stay healthy though. That would provide us with a very dangerous duo at the wide out position.

Because I think Newman could kick his butt. I also think the combo of TO and Smith would be a good pairing as far as complimenting skill

Every time I see WR rumors like this, my first thought is "Well, the Eagles can offer them more." So why get excited?

Good point.

But what self-respecting WR with an ego is going to want to play with an insecure imbecile like Donovan McNabb?

There could be a reason why the Eagles have not been able to attract a quality WR free agent.

It isn't like they haven't tried.

TO has never been arrested so why does he get mentioned in the same breath as pacman and Tank

I don't think the Eagles could handle Steve Smith. They certainly couldn't handle T.O.!

Smith will be an Eagle by opening kickoff-book it.

Any WR who goes to Philadelphia will have to take a backseat and kiss McNabb's ring.

I don't see Smith as being that sort of fellow.

To me, he seems much like Owens. If the QB develops a relationship with him, he will run through a brick wall for him. Just as he has done with Delhomme.

Seriously doubt this would ever happen but would love to be proved wrong. I would also like to think if he tried anything like that on this team, the players would take care of it rather than grumbling that they would take care of it.

Get enough talented wide receivers on the market, and Dallas is more likely to come away with one.

Steve Smith is a stud. He wouldn't be my personal preference for obvious reasons, but I bet I would enjoy him on this offense.

I don't see this happening.

The Panthers will not trade him within the NFC.

I could see the Dolphins going after him because Henning had a relationship with Carolina and Parcells loves Smith.

Well...we do need a quicker WR than what we currently have.

Seriously though, he isn't going anywhere.

That is exactly what I think. The teams holding the WRs will begin to lower the asking prices into the do-able ranges.

You're right, Smith would be more likely to whup McFlabb's butt.

Which I would pay a lot of money to watch. :)
