Stoops to the XFL

The game passed Stoops by in college. Why would you want JJ to get him?

In his last season at OU he was 11-2, won the Big 12, won the Sugar Bowl, and finished 5th in the national rankings. I'm not saying the Cowboys should want him, but I'm not sure how that translates into the game passing him by.

With these college coaches you have to add context.

Stoops played in a conference that was a 2 team race almost every season.

He was great early in his career but as college football evolved he could never do anything on the big stage.

He was a defensive coach and his defenses were always garbage.

OU doesn't have to play very many tough road games against quality opponents. Texas is usually their best opponent and the game is played on a neutral field.

He was constantly out coached in National Title games and his teams just weren't prepared for teams that could punch back.

Stoops may be a good CEO type but he is lacking as a game day coach. Another clapper.

If the XFL is akin to old fashioned football, I am all for it. If it is more of the same of this soft "entertainment" it will not last. If the refs are a small part of their games, I will watch.

That season OK State finished 11th and West Virginia 18th in the final polls. The season before (2015-Stoops 2nd to last season), OU also finished 5th in the final poll, TCU finished 7th, Baylor finished 13th and OK State finished 20th. Doesn't really seem like the Big 12 was weak to me.

In any case, I'm not saying he was the best of the best of the best, or that he had no deficiencies at all. He certainly can't come close to matching Nick Saban - but who can? But he was still among the very top of his profession when he retired.

Ok State and TCU are jokes compared to OU.

I'm not impressed by a guy who has way better teams then his opposition and wins those games. Lincoln Riley hasn't skipped a beat. OU just outclassed their conference in talent under Stoops and they usually did it with offense and that is not Stoops cup of tea.

He's an overrated coach. He was great early in his career but he was just taking advantage of a lot of talent and a weak schedule for most of his OU career.

Would never work unless Jerry kept his mouth shut and let Stoops run the team as he wants to, not Jerrah, and we all know that won’t happen.

please, if he's willing to work in the XFL, then Jerry could write him a big enough check to be Garrett

Youre obviously not a big 12 fan. Google only shows you so much. The reason boy genius is head coach at OU right now is because of the short comings of Stoops. Kinda like what happened to Bowden. The coach in waiting was the OC.

I'll be watching. A successful XFL, that puts any pressure at all on the NFL, is the only way we're going to see the NFL league office forced to show some accountability.
:thumbup:Don't underestimate the NFL league office. They can avoid anything for the right price.

the AAF is not signing any name players at all. Ive only heard of 3 names. The teams do not have ownership, the league owns all teams. It will be interesting to see how 2019 and 2020 play out for these new leagues.

AAF has a multi-year broadcast deal with NFL Network, which is pretty big.

I'd bet on the XFL signing some big name, "controversial" players of sorts.

I expect Dez Bryant to be on the Dallas XFL team. Likely will see some other big names around the XFL. Josh Gordon could be in this category, as may be guys like Tebow or Kaepernick.

You have got to be kidding me. Dez Bryant is not playing for the XFL. Josh Gordon possibly, he didn't make nearly as much as Dez over his career. Tebow is probably fine doing baseball and Kaepernick would not for several reasons.

Probably not as draining as NFL or college. Still back at the game making a nice check. I don't blame him.

That might draw some interest. It will also give it media coverage quickly.

So your argument is that TCU didn't earn it's 11-2 record and No. 7 final ranking, and Ok St. didn't earn its 10-3 record and #20 ranking (and what about Baylor at #13?), and that explains how the Big 12 was weak even with OU, TCU, Baylor and OK St. all in the top 20?

As for TCU being a joke, how do you feel about Ole Miss as compared to Alabama? Ole Miss finished 10th in the rankings, and was the next highest ranked SEC team after Alabama. Does that taint Alabama and Nick Saban's national championship?

And how do you feel about all the lesser conferences? The Big 12 hasn't been as good a conference as the SEC for a number of years, but winning the Big 12 carries at least as much weight as any other conference, and much more weight than most conferences.

Yep.

TCU may have had a good record but they still are nothing compared to Oklahoma.

This isn't the NFL. The talent gap is much wider between OU and TCU.

OU beating TCU is nothing more then them taking care of business because TCU doesn't have near the resources as OU. In fact I applaud their coach more then I do Stoops for doing so much with less talent.

Stoops had it easy after the very early 2000's. He built it and got fat and happy.

Passed him by? Not hardly, he was doing well and had Riley as his OC. He got crossways with one of the fat cats that supports OU after that video of Mixon went public. The problem for Stoops was the word out was he had seen that video when he took the limited action he took. He should have dumped that pos and he would still be HC at OU.

How blind can a HC be with the history of OU and Switzer to not know that's going to blow up? I was in OK at the time and some long time OU and Stoops supporters wanted him gone.

Stoops, like a lot of college guys, is better at recruiting than actually coaching and handling guys that get paid, legally, to play is a challenge for even the best of them. But the XFL shouldn't have a bunch of overpaid tails wagging the dog in their start up.

Have you read any articles about why he’s doing it? Clearly not.

Lol, not to mention you act like we could get any coach we wanted to for the right price and that’s highly doubtful.

Why does everyone assume if Jerry hired a coach and kept his mouth shut, it would work like the fans want it to.

He hired Bill Parcells and kept his mouth shut, let Bill pretty much run the team. We seen how many playoff wins that got us.

Stoops was a defensive coach that always had terrible defenses and relied on his offenses, weak schedule, superior talent, and homefield advantage to create the mirage that he was a good coach.

The game passed him by quick and he became a dime a dozen coach that was good at keeping the status quo.

Come on.

Bill took an awul team and made them playoff contenders immediately and he never had a QB until his last season.

Garrett would've been Campo quality or worse with some of those teams Bill had.
