Stopping the run

Looking at game 1 results, may be the biggest disappointment on the D were the DTs.
They were supposed to be a big improvement providing more push for rushing the QB while the penetration would also stop RBs in the backfield.

The approach is to stop the run by getting to the QB.
In comparison Giants had 2 350lb DTs that handled the running game led by #1 OL in NFL...?

May be Marinelli needs to go?
He insists on quick twitch all along the DL.
You are not going to get 350LB quick DTs unless you draft really high or you pay $10/yr for free agents.
We did neither.
We drafted a 3rd pick and spent $4M for a DT.

Unless we spend those type of resources like the Giants did on the DT, you need to compromise.
Get a 1Tech who is big but quicker than Golden Cock.

With DTs with less ability to get to the QB, we need a more modern blitzing scheme.
That is not Marinelli who uses simple blitz packages.
This is sounding a lot like Ryan who we got rid of.

We blitzed, but the blitzers got stoned. Sean Lee came a couple of times, I saw Scandrick on one or two as well.

Agree that we need to better players. You either draft and develop them or pay for them. There is no magic formula. Free agents net immediate results but you pay more, or you can draft and wait anywhere from 1-4 years to see results. More often it's more than a year.

Kinda like buying fruit. I can buy a tomotoe for $1 and eat it now, or buy a tomato seed for like .02 and wait for two years

When you have a small mlb you have to run blitz more. It sucks but you have to

Agreed on getting players and waiting on them.
In the meantime, we need to be more creative with what we have.

Also the insistence on quick twitch players are limiting us.
DL who cannot stop the run, trying to penetrating and being ripped.
So the legacy of Marinelli is lasting as we pay serious $ to DL who are basically tweeners.
Imagine $9M and $4M for Crawford and the new free agent going to the Giants free agent DL.
Without reliable middle of the DL, hard to play fancy blitzing schemes.
That assumes we get rid of Marinelli and have a DC who has some imagination.

The front office deserves as much blame here as anyone. They've had four years now to bring in adequate personnel for this scheme and they have failed miserably.

FO built a top OL with those resources and hopefully more.

They got DTs for Marinelli's system.
The problem is the system is out of date.

If we get rid of Marinelli, we could cut Crawford after June 1 and save ~$4M for 2007.
But we would need a new 3tech unless Collins steps up.
Still would need a top RDE because Gregory is totally unreliable.

Luckily the OL is good for many years as long as Green replaces Free.
And Dak appears to be a good one and RB is all set.
Will still to spend resources on a WR2 because Williams needs to be gone, unless Butler can stay healthy.
When Witten retires (soon) we can spend his $ on a WR.
Frankly, may as well have some fun with Dak's strength.
Go 3WR/4WR as primary offense with some no huddle to take advantage of Dak and Zeke.

oh good, does that mean we can afford to buy Crayton a new pair of hands for the Giants playoff game then?

$4M for June 1 release of Crawford.
There is a good chance Romo may be June 1 also given his situation. I think that would be $5M savings.
Witten may last through next year but probably not longer. That is $8M.
If the new DT does not work out, he could be June 1 also.
With cap going up probably $10M/year, these moves may net us 2 DL worth signing.

I don't have a problem with one of the DT's being a quick twitch guy to beat what is usually a slower twitch guard. I have a problem with not having a monster at the 1T who can push the pocket and always demand a double team due to his strength and size.

Get a nasty big and quick -- think Wilfork in his prime -- and Dallas won't be getting run all over........as well as have a better chance to get to the QB.

We seem to be looking for our tomatoes in the 25 cent bin or maybe lying on the ground, discarded by another shopper. So far our tomatoes kinda suck. Then we wonder why the Marinelli marinara doesn't taste so good.

$4M is not in the 25 cent bin while it is not 1st class either.
the cook dictates only one type of ingredient is good when there may be other options.
may be the cook should be in the 25 cent bin or lying on the ground...
