Well he didnt start because who was ahead of him? This guy named Terrell Suggs. Ever heard of him?

Yeah, I have actually. But if the guy was that good - as good as he and his agent seem to think he is - he would have been starting. And maybe the team wouldn't have signed Elvis Dumervil as a free agent?

The reality is you can find a SDE in the draft much easier than a good 4-3 WDE.

That type of bigger, less explosive player is far less rare than an elite pass rusher.

For instance Dallas could draft Mario Edwards Jr, Michael Bennett or Arik Armstead between picks 25-50 to start at SDE.

Whereas a guy like Dupree whom I'd love at WDE may well get drafted top 20.
If you fell about 10 spots and drafted Bennett or Armstead they may not start as a rookie but they'd be your long-term SDE.
You could start Mincey and DLaw while having Spencer and a rookie as your second team options.

One thing Spencer can do is play the run.

Well this is the first yr he has gotten significant playing time. He was a 5th round draft pick. He's put in the work and just came into his own this yr.

Armstead is going to be drafted in the top 20. Edwards provides zero passrush. I could live with that if gardner can provide the rush. Bennett is a 3tech

Armstead is not rated top 20 on most boards and in fact closer to 50. Dude ran a 5.10 40 at the combine.
Bennett is a tweener who can play 3T or SDE. Not strong enough for regular DT duty.
Edwards is actually the one who may go higher based upon pure measurables but he is a pretty good fit at SDE.

I,wouldn't give that kind of money to a part time player, and I doubt Dallas would either. I see Dallas bring in a vet. DE at a reasonable price and drafting someone also.

I think Dallas is basically looking for a value here. Stephen has said as much.
It may be a far more significant cost than Mincey was but 7/8 mil per? Not likely to happen.
That is what we paid Spencer as a franchise tagged guy.

The team has had better luck with younger, cheaper guys.
And will VERY likely follow that pattern.

Jabaal Sheard would be the best bet, imho, to give Dallas the best value for an affordable cost. Cleveland had him miscast as an OLB in the 3-4 where he's like a fish out of water. Put him at DE with the Cowboys and he'll blossom. He'd more than likely come at a very affordable cost and finally be in his element as a 4-3 DE..

Yes, I can see this being the type of player that would interest Dallas. His cost should be reasonable since he's been playing out of position. But put him back at DE and his value is much greater.

Yeah, but 4 years in the league and never a starter? Not a fan. I'll pass on him.

Any DE that costs less than 20m total and no more than 5m per year probably has our attention.
But there is a lot of money floating around free agency and there may not be many bargains this off-season.

JPP getting franchised? Hughes turning down 8m per year? Good grief. The market is terrible for teams looking at DEs.
Hardy might actually get 100 million while sitting on the friggin exempt list.

Yup and this forum thinks he'd take a discounted price.

I would be happy with Dallas filling the DE need in Fa and just go into the draft from there. All i want is one player in Fa thats a DE.

Not interested in giving big-time money to a part-time player.

If we're choosing a consolation prize for failing to get the best, give me Sheard.

Me too.

And I don't think Sheard is going to get more than $3 mil per season.

Ya think?

I just don't see it.

Dude is 25 years old with ~6 sacks per year to his resume.
Even average fans know he is a good 4-3 fit.

I don't think he is as good as Hughes but he's only a half-step below.
And Hughes is turning his nose up at 8mil apparently.

I think Sheard is about the high end of what Dallas may actually do.

Anyways we'll know more in a week as the market will fire out of the blocks come Sunday.

I think that's a bit on the conservative side. Given the market, I expect at least $5 million.

If we could get him for $3 million, I'd be ecstatic.

Could someone drop 5 or 6 mil per season on the guy? You bet.

It will be interesting to see if they will.

Given the need across the league at the position, and the small number of quality options, and the amount of money that many teams will have, I'm thinking that it's going to be an inflated market and we'll all be shocked at some of the deals these guys are getting.
