Jack is playing end right now. He even played some right end but with Mayowa back, the thought is he will be the LE starter. Irving had a shot until the groin.

He has played well at DE when called upon; I did not know he was starting. Right now I think Crawford is a better DE than Russell. We'll have to see what Mayowa does when he returns. They may be okay (for now) at DE if Mayowa, Irving and Crawford play well in preseason.

For some reason the coaches love McClain, so I think he is a lock....at least for 4 games before he heads to IR.

When McClain is healthy, he flashes some strong traits - he's powerful at the POA, he's got good quickness to get upfield, and he can tie up blockers as a 1T.

The problem is, that three of his six seasons in the league, he's played 3 or fewer games. Last year, he played an outstanding game against the Eagles, and then injured his toe, and was out for the season. He's just not reliable enough.

If memory serves, T. Crawford didn't really "pop" at DE nearly as much as 3T. I thought he had a little more power and not enough bend. I may be wrong, but that's how I remember it.

Exactly.

He doesn't have the quick first-step needed to beat OT's regularly.

If his play doesn't decline, he has to make it. He is in the same boat as Jackson. They have shown too much and are under control for too long at a low cost to let go. If it is close with a vet who cost more and is on a one year deal, the young pup has to get the spot.

Those are actually starters in some of those clips, aren't they?

Not sure. But, for this week, for example, if Crawford isn't playing, I wouldn't mind seeing Jenkins actually start to see what he can do. He would certainly get tested heavily in the run game.

Yeah, I'm intrigued to see if he can string three weeks worth of solid film in a row. If he does, you almost have to find a roster spot for him. I was excited for McClain to come back and make a difference this year, but all things considered, (salary, injury history) if Jenkins shows well throughout the remainder of pre-season I might be inclined to cut McClain loose and give Jenkins the spot.

I hope they don't have to cut McClain... granted he may not last the entire season either, but when he does play he's a force and I luv the idea of being able to send these DT's out there in "waves" so fatigue is not an issue come the fourth quarter.

McClain
T Crawford
Thornton
Jenkins
J Crawford
Collins

I'm going to try keeping them all at least to start the season.

That would be 10 DL by my count with Lawrence being 11 after 4 games. Coe possibly on PS.

LDE 90 Lawrence, Demarcus SUS/4 58 Crawford, Jack SF14 ..95 Irving, David CF15
LDT 97 McClain, Terrell R/Hou .........92 Thornton, Cedric U/Phi 67 Coe, Rodney CF16
RDT 98 Crawford, Tyrone 12/3 .........71 Collins, Maliek 16/3 .....69 Jenkins, Shaneil CF16
RDE 93 Mayowa, Benson R/Oak ......93 Russell, Ryan 15/5 .....79 Tapper, Charles 16/4

If the goal is to keep 10, then I say bye to Russell after game 4.

Just to give you guys an idea of how far away this defense is from being decent. Jenkins is a practice squad talent on the Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos team, and here he makes the 53 man roster. No need to get angry. This is just a fact. No need to get excited over thinking we found something. We didn't.

I wish that some of you had to go up against Hall of Famer Randle, from Texas A&I...he was just too small and without a draft pick as well. He walked on for Minnesota...yea, go figure the nerve of that trash player...maybe just Ernest Price, DE with Detroit, also from Texas A&I.

I think you keep him. Certainly flashed at a 3 tech. But also could help fill in at DE. With the suspensions, he will be able to help fill spots if we need it.

This year, Crawford is the 3-tech, with Collins and Jenkins in rotation behind him. I fully expect that job to be Collins by next year. Bigger body, played that position in college. Breaking his foot will keep him a rotational player this year. Difference is Crawford was drafted to be a 3/4 DE, a run stopper who has found a home inside. That's also why moving him back out to DE would not work, he is not suited to play a 4/3 DE. This is his year to shine inside, and I do think he will be good with the 1-tech's we have beside him. But next year I expect the job to be Collins.

Funny how Denver cut him, but then bring in Melton this week?? They look like the same guy to me, but one is younger.
