Sturm makes bold statement on the incompetence of the 2022 offseason

Yeah but then the defense tailed off eventually. I mean they couldn't stop anyone from Minshew, Dobbs, Texans QB's.....defense peaked first 6 or 7 weeks of the season it seemed.

I don't disagree that the receiving group could be better but I can't say worst in the league. My issue was more so the playbook and what the receivers were asked to run. Corners knew their routes better than they did it seemed.
Yeah agree on the playbook thing too

From what I’ve seen the Cowboys are looking at WRs preparing for the draft. I’m sure they’re also keeping their eyes open for a TE. This is supposed to be a strong TE draft.

TE heavy but WR light. Actually I look at the top WRs and I am not seeing anyone that really makes me think they are worth a top pick

But as we added receivers the play book continued to shrink. When we discovered Pollard was such a weapon the tree still shrunk. Then there were the talented young TEs.
Not sure this was on the missteps of the FO..
Lord knows I blame Jerald for lots!!
Yeah having the 2nd most productive offense sucked. Thank God that guy's gone.

Productive offense that crapped the bed when it counted.
Did it count against the Bucs the week before? Was that win or go home?

It must have been one of those schemes that only thrives during the regular season and wild card round.

All I can say is that at least in that last playoff game against the 49ers, the receivers weren't the main problem on offense. Pollard going down was one of the two main problems. The other was a major choke job by the guy under center. Receivers were getting open. They can't throw it to themselves.

I can't link it. You know where he is. In his most recent piece he makes the following statement when asked how the personnel packages on offense will change this year under McCarthy.

After breaking down their personnel usage last season he says the following:

Somehow, this team was so ill-prepared at receiver that it had to basically stop running its offense because it did not have NFL wide receivers anymore.

-

Whoa. Now let's say he's right. Pretty damning of the front office but does Brandin Cooks change that? Obviously he helps but is that enough? Are we going to rely on a rebuilt (and overrated) Michael Gallup and a Jalen Tolbert sighting (other than a few blurred images floating around the internet) so we are free to run the offense we want to run this year?

I like Brandin Cooks and he certainly is worth the cost to obtain him but the WR position still makes me feel uncomfortable. I want to surround Prescott with so many weapons that even he can beat the 49ers in January.

AdminEdit:

This thread is about RECEIVERS, not Dak Prescott.

Does not matter if you are a Dak hater or homer. Use one of the many other threads to post your constantly repeated opinions on Dak.
The thing that most disappointed me about last season’s front office decision to go into the regular season with UDFA Dennis Houston and career backup Noah Brown as starters was this- that mistake was a repeat of 2018 where they also went into the season with a bunch of nobodys at WR. Which eventually forced Jerry to trade a #1 draft pick for Amari Cooper. Who was then traded 3 and a half years later for a 5th round pick.

A bad habit this FO has shown consistently is their inability to learn from their mistakes QUICKLY. They seem to have an ability to repeat them more than once before learning.

Sturm has been angry since the Cooper trade and this is just an extension of that.

At the end of the day we have replaced Cooper with Cooks and are paying him 40% less for about the same production. Lamb will continue to improve. His route running took a huge leap last year.

The question mark is about WR3. Would you like a surer thing than Gallup and Tolbert? Gallup will be two years and fully recovered from his injury but he was clearly physically diminished last season as evidenced by the absence of his staple go routes. Tolbert is a small school prospect. He could end up anywhere. He was clearly unreliable from an assignment standpoint last year.

I guess so but I am much more worried about LG, NT, RB2 and TE2. WR is definitely in the discussion though, just look at their visits.

Anyone that thinks Gallup was capable of returning to his 2021 form 9 months after going through tendon surgery does not understand the physical demands of NFL football.

Gallup was injured in game 16 of the 2021 season. The 2022 season gave us Gallup at about 70%. The 2023 season will be different, Gallup is an excellent receiver.

Do we need more receivers. Sure, so long as they are an upgrade to what the Cowboys have at #4. However, the first three receivers are solid.

Sturm's take on Gallup is way off base.

The Cooper trade still makes me angry. Not trading him itself given was he was due to be owed. Sabotaging his value beforehand with comments then only getting a fifth for him and then not really doing anything to replace him is what pissed me off. If you're going to trade away the best route runner we had, replace him! No more of this "we like our guys" garbage that didn't work the first time when we got rid of Bryant.

I understand what he's saying but he goes to extremes with this. His clicks have to be down.

The Cowboys aren’t looking to use their top pick on a WR, reports are they’re looking to possibly take a WR at some point. It’s very possible they take a TE with their first pick because this is supposed to be a strong TE group and we have a need there with the departure of Dalton Schultz.

Well no one saw last year coming.

1. Getting rid of your best route runner and one of the faster guys who can play.
2. Thinking CD is an elite #1, no where close. He's really really good for what he can do.
3. Thinking Gallup would be back to 100% coming off leg injury and constant leg issues throught the year.

Sturm can say whatever he wants to generate click$. IMHO, Lamb, Cooks, a year removed Gallup, and a fourth from a group of Tolbert, Hilton, a draft pick, and whomever else, is a fairly decent group. Add Pollard and a couple of promising young TEs, and we’ve got weapons.

Of course I’d like to add to that, but too many people NEED something to fuss about!
He was talking about last year

No cooks
Gimped gallup
Noah Brown.

What have a sub and read the article. He didn’t say what you are claiming he said

OK, I looked up to try and figure out context. Sturm was referring to the beginning of the season when they put Noah Brown & Dennis Houston out there as the #2 & #3.
You know, people talking about Sturm fishing for clicks but we have plenty of posters who fish for likes.

Selective snips and misleading arguments abound.

More idiocy from Sturm, which has become the norm from him since he sold his soul for afternoon drive.
