Wow.

Just...wow.

The following is something I posted in 2010, when Sturm was going to do a Q & A in this forum. He never responded to my post, but something tells me he read it:

"I read your blog fairly regularly and especially enjoy the statistical analysis. Last December, you wrote that Garrett's introduction of contact in practice had made the power running more successful, pointing to an increase in yards per carry on plays run with "22" personnel. Looking at the actual plays that were run, I don't see that our power running improved at all.

For example, the three longest runs we'd had from "22" at the time you posted your numbers--Kitna's bootleg against Detroit, and two tosses to Choice at Indy--all used speed or deception to go around the defense, as opposed to using strength to run over it.

I looked at all the handoffs to running backs with QB under center in 2010, and found no difference in the yards per carry between games 1-8 and games 9-15. This despite the fact that we should have had an advantage in the second half of the season because the OL was healthier, the run D's we faced were weaker, and Felix got a greater share of the carries.

I'd like to believe the physical practices made a difference in OL performance, but I'm having a hard time finding that difference on the field. I'm curious to know if you still believe our power running improved after Garrett was named head coach, in the light of these numbers, and if so, how did it improve?

Handoffs to RB w/QB under center, 2010
Games 1-8: 116 carries for 409 yards (3.5 ypc)
Games 9-15: 155 carries for 537 yards (3.5 ypc)

Conversion percentage on short-yardage runs by RB
(3rd or 4th and 2 or less to go, any down from 2-yard line in)
Games 1-8: 14 of 20 (70%)
Games 9-15: 5 of 17 (29%)"

That. Was awesome.

Tyron Smith was the beginning of the rebuild but the past sins of poor drafting swamped the boat
and we're still floundering.

Winnie, idgit, fuzzy and of course the immortal theogt (COSTA WILL MAKE THE PRO BOWL) all bleated that we who could see were all blind.

This is stupid. Costa was released by the Cowboys on March 7 and was signed by the Colts on March 13. He was a FA for less than a week. Now have the Colts shown they know how to assemble a talented roster?

Just because they didn't want to pay him to back up a guy that has pro bowl talent does not mean he sucks. You would think that after he was signed so quickly you guys would have enough sense to shut up. It makes your position look pretty bad.

Yeah, I'll bite.

I supported Costa and felt he could be an average NFL center and maybe even be slightly above. Despite repeating those expectations over and over again, there were several posters who took my words and somehow twisted them into the idea that he was going to be one of the best centers in the league, he was going to the Pro Bowl, etc.

I would suggest that there were a lot of individual posters that had hope for one or the other of that group....Costa, Kowalski, Arkin and Nagy. Generally, I think most of the Costa supporters didn't think too much of Kowalski and vice versa. I don't really remember anyone being really excited by Arkin, I would say the great majority felt he was a wasted pick especially when he couldn't be called in over Dockery.

Nagy seemed to be more of a tough guy, scrapper and unfortunately injuries just seemed to follow him. He seemed to be the kind you might have starting but you would always be looking to upgrade the spot. Despite having interest in seeing a couple of these guys pan out, I never was averse to the team signing free agents or using high draft picks to improve the OL.

After drafting Frederick, I did feel that the top 5-6 linemen on this team were Smith, Frederick, Free, Leary, Costa and Berny. The biggest question was whether the line was better with Frederick at C and Berny at G or Costa at C and Frederick at G. As it went forward in training camp, it became pretty clear that Frederick was better at C than G so everything settled in pretty quickly. I had no problem with Dallas letting Costa go as he strictly is a center and probably wouldn't ever be active on gameday as such. In fact, I posted it either here or on the Ranch in one of the threads about cap space way before he got cut. It is interesting that Costa did get picked up relatively quickly after being released. If Indy leaves him at center, I think he can compete for them.

and the colts have never blown it on talent? You were one of those that kept claiming all he needed was time. Knew you would never admit how wrong you were. Notice Theogt has been very quiet since costa was cut.

wondered when one of the O Line Pollyanna's would show up. Anyone with a brain and eyes can see that Costa was and always would be a backup. That is why Indy has him; they will do whatever it takes to make sure he is nothing else.

Theo comes in and out especially during the offseason. You are terrible at proving causation.

The Colts have hit far more than they missed and again, he took less than a week to sign. Who is to say that only the Colts were the only team interested. At the end of the day, he was a sought after free agent by virtue of what I just discussed.

Shall I go look up all the quotes you had about how no one is going to want to sign him should he be cut? Then shall we discuss who cannot admit they are wrong?

The Colts have been one hell of a lot better with drafting than we have. When they were contending every year they had like 40+ players that had only played for the Colts. We had like 10. Despite they fact that they have turned their roster almost completely over from the Manning days, they are still competing.

The funny thing too is Sturm says they are leery about Leary but it isn't based at all on his play. It's based on a degenerative condition and what "could" happen. Leary looked decent. I would love to see them add a starter on the OL in the draft.

Leary was better than decent.

Yeah, I think we should give him a chance. He was a rookie last year and played well. People want to replace both guards and RT. I think we should give Leary a chance, and Bern is a great backup OG/OC.
