I will never shy away from my ego. It's huge and it is not fragile. I'm a smart person.. VERY smart.. always have been.. 99th percentile smart. Monster test scores, Ivy League education, the whole shabang. I don't post that to brag but as a simple statement of fact. I have been really good at everything I've ever set my mind to being good at. As for X's and O's knowledge.. I'm sorry.. but nothing I have ever seen or heard from Jerry and Stephen would lead me to believe they are all that versed in that area. I have obviously watched the game pretty much my whole life (over 55 years), played it up through college, coached it up through high school and during my time coaching attended many coaching clinics aimed at learning the ins and outs of the modern game and how to teach it to our kids. Maybe I'm wrong and Jerry and Stephen grind away at X's and O's behind the scenes.. but I doubt it.. I realize that it's a display of hubris to think I could be better at building a team than the Joneses.. Mind you I absolutely LOVE Jerry Jones the owner.. I think he's the best owner in pro sports.. but he has NOT shown himself to be a good GM. And Stephen has really only shown himself to be good at keeping Jerry from making too many impulse buys but he has also allowed $$$ to cost us a lot of good players.. I have no issue declaring that Jerry and Stephen are both better at business than I could ever hope to be.. but they are no better than average as football team builders.. There is not a scenario where I would allow myself to be average at something I would be so passionate about.. at least none that I can conceive of.
Here's the thing about how the Joneses construct their team that gives me the belief that I could do better.. The times when the Cowboys have been good have been times when they have drafted well on the lines.. however invariably the Joneses have allowed themselves to drift away from that model and gone after splashy flashy players.. My philosophy would be an unwavering commitment to the trenches.. and fill in the "skill guys" after. I would never allow my line on either side of the ball to become a weakness.. Ever.. And I would never allow myself to be saddled with slappies at safety. If the guy back there didn't make plays I'd replace him.. period. I would apply that philosophy to pretty much every position.. Produce or get replaced. Period.
