...is a TERRIBLE rule. The NFL needs to take something from College Football and implement a similar overtime process.

I was not rooting for either team in the NFC Championship game, but seeing Minnesota lose in OT without a series on offense seemed unbalanced to me.

I guess the upside in this case is that the Super Bowl would be a good game no matter who played the Colts.

I disagree the college rules in my opinion are terrible and it is one of the reasons I am not a big fan of college football.

Why play a game for 60 minutes where the special teams are so crucial and then in the most crucial of times just eliminate the special teams.

I think its plain stupid and if the nfl ever takes this approach I will be sick.

I'm all for something to get the game over with. When two teams have no defense, it would go on all night without end.

Boy if we had college OT rules we'd probably still be sitting here right now watching GB and ARI playing.

Take today's Minn/NO game.

If Minn ST's stop them inside the 20, force a 3 and out, and then take the punt, .. and then go down and score, all three phases of the game come into play.

You can't get any more fair than that.

College is just that, college.

Yes, but in that example NO still has the advantage because all they need is 1 phase of the game to work well, to win. And it doesn't even have to work all that great cause they can still end it with a kick from half the field away.

I don't think college rules are the answer but I don't think the current system is all that great either.

I still say just go a 5th quarter, if it's still tied up go sudden death. Thats the easiest compromise for all sides.


I hate the college way b/c it turns a 14-14 game into a 38-36 game. Etc. It takes away the whole principle of field position,clock management which are two of footballs biggest keys. If your giving each team a possession, why start them in FG range already, etc. There are several things to hate about it, the same as you can hate the pro way..

Simple solution is add a 5th quarter, if still tied up go sudden death.

Shut up, they don't need to do anything... you had 60 minutes to win the football game, you blew it with 19 seconds left when you took as too many men in the huddle and your QB resorts back to his history of boenheaded play and throws back against his body and is picked off..

I have to agree that a 5th quarter seems the most logical. Maybe just a 10 minute quarter or something like that.

I hate the college rules but the current system doesnt seem to work well in today's age of offensive football.

Or they could implement an XFL style system where the games kick in PPV mode and both sides cheerleaders fight and the first side to fully declothe the other side wins.

That doesn't change the discussion because the discussion isn't whether the Vikings should have gotten a chance to score, the discussion is about overtime in general.

From the 2000 through 2007 regular seasons, there have been 124 overtime games. In every single game except one (I believe), the team that won the toss elected to receive. And those receiving teams won 60% of the time (and tied once).

The dreaded 'lose-the-coin-toss-never-touch-the-ball' scenario happened in 37 out of the 124 OT periods, or about 30% of all overtime games.

Love sudden death and hate that college crap. If your defense can't stop them you don't deserve to win.

I like the college over time format in the pro's I would not start at the 35 I make it the 50.
