If Dallas decides they want a premier pass rusher, who would you rather have in this group? I think you can make a pretty strong case for any of the three:

Suh: Maybe the most dominant DT in the NFL. RKG?

Hardy: 13 sacks in 2012, 14 in 2013. Can line up as both the LDE and RDE.

JPP: Just turned 26. One of the most game-changing DE's in the NFL when healthy. Freak athlete.

Personally, I would love to see what Rod M. would be able to do with a healthy JPP. I think he's just starting to hit his peak years.

Who would you pick?

I'll take one of each

Seriously, I would take Hardy, then Suh and only JPP if it was a bargain(which it won't be)

JPP. I don't really think there is as much risk with him as the others due to character. I think he still will be a beast moving forward and gut feel only but he seems like he would fit well with this team.

I am sure everyone is all for that type of option if you can find it. There's a reason why the top guys cost so much because they are known entities. You can speculate who can be able to get you 10 sacks but then you are just projecting and hoping.

Brandon Graham, Jaabal Sheard, George Johnson, Stephen Pea, Pernell McPhee, Adrian Claiborne, Cory Peters.....grab me 2 from that list + a 1st or 2nd round DL pick and I'd be happy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to sit here and complain if we sign Suh, Hardy or Jpp. They are all terrific players that would help us out. I just don't believe you build a team (in any sport) by signing high price free agents. I've seen it backfire way too many times

I'm thinking the Cowboys sign none of those three. They really like Tyrone Crawford (three sacks, 25 pressures, 12 QB hits once moved to DT last season) and DeMarcus Lawrence (sacks in each of the two playoff games). Any free agent signings will be of the "bargain" variety- perhaps Brandon Graham, C.J. Mosely, Jabaal Sheard, etc..

If i have to take one of them i take JPP. The other two are pretty horrible beings.

Based strictly on play and ignoring salary cap implications I'd roll with Suh.

None of the above. Too much money and commitment. Build through the draft like the o line

I tend to agree with your approach however I truly think we're just a few players away from a championship right now and Romo's window is going to close very very soon.
If you look at the draft and where were are picking, we're only getting one pick of the top, potentially game-changing type DTs or DEs. This, IMO, means we need to shore up at least one position along the DL, be it DE or DT via FA. Obviously, Suh next to Crawford, DLaw, and our first round pick (plus maybe Spencer?) would turn a weakness into an instant strength. However, as another poster pointed out, rookie DEs don't have a good record historically of changing games. So, we could be better served getting a DE like Hardy or Hughes and use the 27 pick on a DT like Bennett or Brown, or even add a cheaper DT FA (possibly Paea (sp?) or re-sign Hayden and Melton to cheaper contracts and add depth with a non-first round pick). Bottomline though IMO is that either DE or DT simply HAS to be addressed via an impact FA signing, and I lean towards the DE position since we want to win NOW!
On a side note, would love to add a top FS to our FA signings, McCourty? and get Ro McClain back.

In 1991 the Cowboys lost a 2nd round playoff game to the Lions because they couldn't rush the passer.

They acquired Haley, a proven commodity at DE that offseason and the rest is history.

In 2015 the Cowboys lost a 2nd round playoff game to the Packers because they couldn't rush the passer.

They have an opportunity to acquire Hardy, a proven DE.

Haley... Hardy.

Hmm.

I see us going this direction. We could sign a top money guy, but I think we seem to be going more with the "two or three guys for the price of one" philosophy lately. Don't see it changing. Would be nice if we could get a couple of secondary players in that second level range as well.

I'm certain that Jerry will think about how Haley got them over the top.

Similarly, when the Bobcats were trying to make there franchise more attractive to fans, they drafted now out of the league Adam Morrison despite all the scouts reports that he was terrible in all the workouts. Local reports later speculated that Jordan pulled the trigger on him in an effort to have a white "star" be the face of the team to attract more fans.

If Jordan really wants to attract more fans he should try putting together a team with enough talent to win consistently and compete in the playoffs.

There's also different tiers within the group of the guys you listed. Some will be more desirable than other. They may not warrant Suh money but they won't be exactly cheap either. I guess we will have to see if the coaches think there are untapped potential of these guy that's worth the money.

If i could, i would love to sign Hardy, and then take a chance on Nick Fairley. He is a mean player, and we desperately need that. If he can stay healthy and with Rod coaching him, i think it would be a great start to filling holes in our defense

at moment I am all in for Hardy. He changes this team over-night on defense.

I'm concerned that Hughes benefitted from the other 3 really good players on his DL. He didn't do much before he came to Buffalo.

Knighton (Denver) looks like more a a run plugger than quick twitch Marinelli type DL. I think Josh Brent can fill that role.

Really Josh Brent is as good as possibly the best 1-tech free agent out there right now (and one of the best in the leagues). I agree that he won't add much to the pass rush (though 5 sacks in the 2013-2014 playoffs isn't nothing) but our run defense wasn't that great last year either. Beyond that a good run-stuffer is generally pretty good at collapsing the pocket, which will help our other 3 guys get more sacks. As for Hughes, I don't have much invested in him, if you got another guy outside of JPP and Hardy who are probably both going to be cost preventative I am all ears.
