I expect the Cowboys to continue being conservative when it comes to questions of signing veteran free agents with overly demanding price tags. The vet FAs that we acquire are likely to continue being mid-level choices that should allow us to draft BPAs, rather than drafting lesser talents to fill our most desperate needs. I think we might wisely rid ourselves of coveting any FA acquisitions that might tend to be pricey for a team like the Cowboys that already has far too many free agents within our own roster to satisfy. Let's be realistic, folks.

Is "none of the above" an option? They all will require a lot of money, and all come with some sort of garbage, whether it be injuries, beating women, or on the field issues.

Just so people know Hardy domestic violence case was dismissed today which means he will be able to play. Sign on a Melton type contact and go from there. Hardy is a beast

Release the Kraken

Yeah.
But he will serve a suspension. Don't really want that lingering around the clubhouse

So. I changed my mind on him.

JPP. I don't really think there is as much risk with him as the others due to character. I think he still will be a beast moving forward and gut feel only but he seems like he would fit well with this team.

Isn't he a guy that wasn't even a football player until much later. A freak. And now....

JPP is a one year wonder though.

Really Josh Brent is as good as possibly the best 1-tech free agent out there right now (and one of the best in the leagues). I agree that he won't add much to the pass rush (though 5 sacks in the 2013-2014 playoffs isn't nothing) but our run defense wasn't that great last year either. Beyond that a good run-stuffer is generally pretty good at collapsing the pocket, which will help our other 3 guys get more sacks. As for Hughes, I don't have much invested in him, if you got another guy outside of JPP and Hardy who are probably both going to be cost preventative I am all ears.

If Marinelli get the guys he wants, a run plugger DT won't get that many snaps. They play Nickel over 50% of the snaps. Marinelli would not want a run plugger in the Nickel if he had other options.

Let's say they play 60 snaps in a game. That's 120 snaps for the DTs. If they play Nickel 50% of the time, then that's 60 snaps for pass rushing DTs and then they have a 1 and a 3 tech in the base so that's 30 more snaps for the pass rusher (3tech) and 30 snaps for the run plugger.

Maybe Hughes is OK, but he had 3 years in Indy where he didn't do much. IIRC Indy was running a 4-3 during that time.

He went to Buffalo where the other 3 starters on the DL are all All-Pro:
Marcell Dareus
Kyle Williams
Mario Williams

Hughes is 6-2, 254 so he's on the smallish side for a 4-3 DE. I think a 3-4 team will overpay him.

I'm a fan of Pernell McPhee. He is a 280 pound 3-4 OLB that also takes some snaps as a 3-4 DE. His is miscast in the 3-4, IMO. I expect him to be far cheaper than Hughes.

Graham and Sheard are interesting if the price is low.

Hardy missed 17 games in 2014. How many more does he need to miss for something where the charges were dropped?

If Dallas decides they want a premier pass rusher, who would you rather have in this group? I think you can make a pretty strong case for any of the three:

Suh: Maybe the most dominant DT in the NFL. RKG?

Hardy: 13 sacks in 2012, 14 in 2013. Can line up as both the LDE and RDE.

JPP: Just turned 26. One of the most game-changing DE's in the NFL when healthy. Freak athlete.

Personally, I would love to see what Rod M. would be able to do with a healthy JPP. I think he's just starting to hit his peak years.

Who would you pick?

JPP by a mile. I don't wanna deal with Hardy and Suh's antics, and JPP is proven.

There is concern about how he fell off and then came back in his contract season. He also had back surgery at some point which is never a good thing.

JPP Sacks:
2010 4.5
2011 16.5
2012 6.5
2013 2
2014 12.5

Yeah, that's some crazy volatility there. If he were coming at a discount, it would be one thing, but JPP's looking for a premium this offseason. I do think he'd be a nice fit here, but I'm just not comfortable making that sort of commitment based off of the injury and the dip in production.

I don't think he gets suspended, his case was dismissed and missed 17 weeks already. Tell me how punishing him more makes sense

More like 2 year wonder. Like Hardy. Both only have 2 seasons with double digit sacks. Both have been in league 5 seasons.

Hardy, JJP and then Suh if I'm paying the bills. Hardy is the best value for the money. JJP has back issues, Suh is a beast but his on field antics will be a headache for Garrett. Give me Hardy and his sack production.

If healthy? JPP. Very disruptive player. Plus it weakens the Gnat's front 7 and strengthen ours. What is he 27?

Imagine D-Law realizing his potential and having JPP on the other side for the next 3-5 years. I could. :)

You saved me the trouble of pointing that out.

I want no part of Just Plays when getting Paid.

As long as the NFL doesn't make yet another mistake and try to further punish him?

I would prefer Hardy.

Unlike JPP, his arrow was consistently pointed upwards, and not just when he was about to get paid. Also, no back surgery involved.

And while I don't like him, Suh is a rare defensive tackle that doesn't come along very often. While I wouldn't pay it, I could see signing him to load up for a run.

So, my order would be Hardy, Suh, JPP (but I would go cheaper before him).

I completely agree with this post. I think Hardy would be an awesome fit for this defense.
