the 2 surviving members are 65 and 66 years old--they should have an age limit--really, they should tank the whole halftime show

They've been terrible for years.

The Who sucked.
Springsteen sucked.
Tom Petty sucked.
Prince was DECENT.
Rolling Stones sucked.
Paul McCartney sucked.
Janet Jackson & Timberlake sucked.
Shania Twain & Sting sucked.
U2 was pretty powerful, especially in the wake of 9/11.
Phil Collins, Enrique Iglesias and Babyface = I did not watch.

So two half time shows this decade were watchable and entertaining/ interesting or moving.

I liked the Who, thought they did pretty good.
Not a Springsteen fan by any means, but I thought he put on a good show.
Though Petty did a good job.
Prince Rocked
Did not care much for the stones performance and I am a huge stones fan.
McCartney was ok.
All the other ones on your list sucked except for U2

The music of the Who, Tom Petty, Bruce, Prince, and U2 is timeless. Their music is good enough to be played over multiple decades and still be good. We will not hear about LAdy Gag GAg, T Payne,THe Black Eyed Peas , and many of todays artists in multiple years let alone multiple decades. These new artists music has an expiration date.

I thought the Who was terrible. I mean, I'm a huge Who fan and I recognize that they are a pretty old band and just can't do it like they used to but they were not good IMO.

That was the bad news.

The good news was that we didn't see any nipple.

I thought it was a fantastic half time show and I'm not a huge Who fan. Was somewhat disappointed they didn't do My Generation but otherwise a very entertaining performance.

Next year should be ZZ Top since it's in Texas.

Works for me.

Or they could do AC/DC
They could sing thunderstruck.

...We went to Texas, Yeah Texas and we had some fun...

How about they get some talent that is still up near the top of their game or at least has had a pulse within the last ten years????

Alicia Keys, Pink, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Weezer, (please oh please not Nickelback), Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Hit up Pearl Jam. They are still around and have an incredible list of songs. Maybe hit up Van Halen before they get like the Who was last night.

Heck, I don't even like the music of some of these artists, but I can at least accept that they put out a good product and people under 30 would know and care who they are.

How about George Straight? :D

Lord in Heaven forgive me, I totally neglected the Country Music folks. I would also love to see Toby Keith or Garth Brooks take a stab at it. Miss Carrie Underwood could probably do a great show as well.

If you are going to bring in some country music talent why not Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett?

Lifted from a Springsteen board, a very good perspective IMO.

Let's face it--it's a tough gig for any performer/band. A 12-minute time limit, not exactly a "stadium show" for acts who have/do play stadiums given it's a championship football game, high expectations/huge audience, need for pytrotechnics, etc.--all contribute to a rather contrived performing context for artists trying to compress what they are about into a programmed slot in a massive TV show in between Peyton, Drew, and shots of Archie and Eli, as well as Betty White, Doritos, and Danica. These are not exactly the ingredients which make for compelling performances. Yes, it does seem to lead to a momentarily sales bump and allows artists to be part of a larger conversation for a day or two and/or the object of criticism and ridicule...but then it's over. I enjoyed Bruce's performance, because it was him, and he did a good job, but, for me, the performances at the Inaugural concert and the Kennedy Center Honors were much, much more powerful and memorable in the long run. Yeah, The Who were "OK" given the context, but I think their larger legacy in rock music is rather secure, as is Bruce's, Petty's, the Stones', Prince's, McCartney's, and U2's, and that's what is really important, NOT a Super Bowl appearance.

The Who Thought Super Bowl Performance Was Just "OK"

Even Roger Daltrey was underwhelmed by The Who's half-time show.

"I thought it went OK," the band's lead singer told ESPN.com of their 12-minute Super Bowl performance.

"I understand. It's a TV show. Cameras were everywhere," he added. "I was so blinded that I couldn't see."

Daltrey, 65, said those in the stadium weren't exactly into the five-song medley of their greatest hits either.

"I really wished the crowd would have gotten into singing the songs with us more. That's how it is in Europe for our soccer matches. I wanted more banter," he complained.

Guitarist Pete Townshend, 64, defended the group's performance.

"We were trying to put on a great show," he said. "We had as much fun as we could have."

Critics were lukewarm on the half time show. While the Boston Herald called it "12 minutes of great rock 'n' roll," the Chicago Sun-Times said they were "woefully flat and out of sync" and the Dallas Morning News wrote, "the stage was the most exciting part of the show."
