Since our new DB Coach, Joe Whitt was hired, all I have heard is he covets big/long corners, with elite speed. Bryan Broaddus, even mentioned it on the draft show the other day. Before he even mentioned it, I've heard the same thing a few times when reading up on both Quinn/Whitt after they were hired.

This suggests (speculation), that Patrick Surtain's skillset might not be the type of corner they covet. They already have a quality corner who can cover the so called X Receivers, who has speed limitations in Trevon Diggs, they may want to pair him up with more of a elite, speed type on the other side. Players like Farley, Melifonwu (who had a terrific week at the Senior Bowl) are better fits. Something to watch during the process.

You can count the guy with elite length / speed on one hand in this draft...Farley...maybe Meli.

If it’s gong to be a heavy zone scheme I think the long speed drops off and he’s likely going to be looking for long, physical corners who can click and close.

I actually think Surtain / Horn are better suited for this as I’m not sure they have that deep speed.

1. "Speculation". Not fact.
2. Since when is Bryan Broadus the go-to guy for Cowboys predictions? Just another voice in the crowd.
3. Misdirection by the team? Not unheard of, in fact it's fairly common.

But even if true, No problem. Wasn't like he was another Deion or Revis, yes he would help the team but there are other quality cornerbacks - Fairly, Horn, e.g. that will probably be available at 10, or even later...

I have heard the same things. I think Surtain is Diggs 2.0, he can play well, but may not fit the mold they're after. They can get away with 1 good CB who isn't fast but feel they need to have 1 that can fly to pair with him. Which sounds like a good philosophy but may be a mistake in the long run. I do think they'd be thrilled to have him fall to them in the 2nd like Diggs did.

If they both some how get to 10 I think they take Farley. If Farley's gone and Sutain is there, there is still a chance they take him. Parsons could be in the mix as well, but given those 2 choices, I think they would serious look to trade out of the spot or perhaps take Slater as suggested.

I think you’re right about the type of corners that are ideal for the scheme. Premier speed is not a requisite trait in Cover 3 for corners. Length is a benefit as well as having CBS that can tackle. Look at the corners the Seahawks were trotting out in Seattle’s heyday: Sherman, Browner, Maxwell (I’m not sure what happened in the Atlanta).

Farley looks like a starter in the slot cb spot Day 1. I think he will make plays. Surtain looks like a zone coverage guy Covering the X wr on the outside. If push come to shove, I think I want Farley.

If he makes it to us.

I like speed in the secondary. It can make up for some mistakes. Look at L'Jarius Sneed in KC. He was a pretty effective safety for KC and he was a 4th round pick by the SB winners. He ran a 4.37 at the combine. Speed is a weapon.

I think the Cowboys need more speed all around. And they may have to find 2 new CBs anyway so why not look for some speed? You can't be too fast in the NFL, but you can be too slow. But I also agree technique, size and quickness matter too. All other things being almost equal, I would always take the faster guy.

Speed is nice. But being smart, instinctual players are what we need.

Lewis ran a 4.47 and Awuzie ran a 4.37. But that doesn’t translate to much on Sunday’s.

Im not worried about Surtains speed at all. Toss a solid FS and watch him own his side of the field

It is something to watch as this off-season plays out.

Back years ago Dallas won a playoff game by a score of 5-0.

Not saying if that's a good or bad thing, but it's not likely to happen again. A team with good, speedy receivers WILL score tds and put up good yardage, I want my corners to limit the other team's receivers mostly, I'm not out to find the "shutdown" corner, not sure there's one available in the draft this year anyway....

I've read/heard from multiple people in regards to Whitt liking elite size/speed for the position, not the typical zone corner of the past. Just look at last year's draft as an indicator under Quinn/Whitt with the Falcons. They drafted AJ Terrell from Clemson who had size and 4.4 speed at the position.
