SUV Drivers 50% Less Likely to Die in a Crash

If you drive an SUV, you know that part of their allure is the feeling of safety they provide. Even compact SUVs can seem studier than their shorter, svelter car cousins. But studies haven't supported that impression of safety with facts -- until now.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has compiled data from auto accidents occurring on U.S. roads between 2006 and 2009. The major finding? Fatality rates for SUV drivers were significantly lower than for drivers of other models. How significantly? About 50%.

They are much safer today, there for a while they had trouble being so top heavy that were easy to flip over

I have a CR-V and I feel like I can see better when I'm driving. I have also driven little tiny cars and it was always uncomfortable, not being able to see your surroundings well.

I have a 335 and the wife an X5. In the 3 series I feel like I can avoid more accidents but in the X5 I feel as though I can survive more accidents. So I guess it's a trade off.

Well, let's see. It's a COMPLETE waist of gas. A huge part of the reason we are so dependent on foreign oil is all the SUV's we Americans feel we need. They are too wide for the road. They completely defeat the purpose of a REAL hummer. They contribute probably TWICE as much pollution. People don't buy HUMMERS because of their functionality (they can get a CRV, or something smaller). They get HUMMERS because they are total "me-me's" and the world MUST notice them as they drive their doosh-mobile around.

Well you could say the same about the sports cars out there as well. Hard to holler about being dependend on foreign oil when we refuse to drill our own. But not willing to get into political arguement. Woodygirl might hurt us.
