Shame on Will McClay and the FO...fooled them once, twice, thrice. They drafted Joey Ivie...ok a pass on a late round pick. But, Taco over Watt was just stupid, and to cap it all off they draft Hill over several superior players.

I promise many ppl on forums said Taco was trash predraft and Watt was a baller. Many rather not have drafted Hill, but the guys who are professionals couldn't figure this out...or even worse deferred when the knew it was a turrible mistake.

Now I'm just glad Big Mike is in the house to clean some of this stuff up.

 Maybe somebody should have asked Big Mike why they (GB) traded down with the pick right before Watt was taken. All of this sounds good until they go 6-10 and the Fat Man takes his own turn passing up HOFers in the draft. This ain’t no exact science.

McCarthy had little say.

I mean it’s a good excuse... but it doesn’t change anything. The Fat Man isn’t going to magically avoid busts and he also likely signed off on most of the Packers picks. The idea that he will usher in a magical new age of drafting is pretty funny... which is going to become apparent really soon.
Back to your wrong assumptions once again.

I'm not real sure that's what the article said. The article says that McClay agreed that Watt fit more of a LB role and Taco fit DE. It did not say that he agreed with the pick or analysis or whatever. And that is a true statement IMO. He's not really a 43 DE. The article also didn't say that Marinelli liked or rated Taco over Watt. It said they slated DE position and that's why the decision was made to take Taco. Horrible decision for sure but the honest truth is that this was all driven by the teams blind pursuit of a pass rusher and not the more reasonable approach of Best Player Available.
You're wrong. Just plain wrong on so many points.

T.J. Watt Vs. Taco Charlton in the 2017 NFL Draft Remains A Sore Issue For Dallas Cowboys Fans; New Coach Mike McCarthy Weighs in On A New Philosophy

The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2017 NFL Draft with a well-considered top-of-the-draft plan. They then executed that plan. Three years later, maybe it's not really the fault of defensive end Taco Charlton that he didn't live up to first-round billing.

This is a sad post mortem article.

But let's be clear. The great Will McClay stood by and let this happen.

There's a reason Marinelli went 0-16 in Detroit. Obviously no eye for talent.
His reputation as a "guru" really became part of the team's DNA.

We marched in guys that fit his "try hard", "quick twitch", etc profile.

And at the end of the day, we got mediocre results.

Even in his hey day at Tampa, his success was directly plugged into the talent.

So glad he is gone. Good luck, Las Vegas.

This argument always reminds me of how Wade approaches things. I’m not a fan of drafting so open ended. Guys like Parcels came in with very specific things they looked for in their players at certain positions, and I think there’s a lot to be said for having a workable structure like that. Belichick seems to work that way, as well.
When you have a scheme that works and real coaches that would work. Whats your name on the giants forum? Is it tigdi?

Normal Jerry Jones revisionist history. Taco did not develop because the "grumpy old men" were trying to play the weed head who they liked more instead of letting Taco play and develop. This made Taco frustrated pulled in and out the line up which lead to the doghouse.

This happen because you did not have a Head Coach in charge of personnel. A real Head Coach would have responded to the grumpy old men.."we are going to go with Taco because Gregory is unreliable so play him and let him develop."

So let's see how long McCarthy will be Head Coach of the Dallas Cowboys with the main grumpy old man still around.

barf i hate how much of a voice marinelli had in the draft and roster decisions...really gross reading about how he and others were more focused on fit than production and on field talent (not just measurables!)

it’s all empty talk right now that mean not a thing but i like what mccarthy says about just drafting the best football players and let the coaches worry about the system and how they fit.
Perfect example of how bad Garrett was. Mccarthy solves that one huge issue immediately with one common sense statement.

Same with Hill.

The guy pounds the table to get these guys then suddenly they're in his "doghouse."

I guess he sees something on film that fits a system that's largely dated, then when they act like millenials the old man couldnt deal.

Jerry was having fun running things and doing whatever meanwhile the staff was pathetic in dozens of ways.

GD’it I’m more mad now than I was when we took TC. He sucked at Michigan. I don’t get what our idiot evaluators we’re looking at. You take the better player and scheme for him, not the other way around. McClay’s an idiot for signing off on that. He should never be forgiven for that one or the waste of space from UCF. A 1 and a 2 blown with zilch to show for them.

I’m not on the Giants forum. Are they any fun?

Come talk to me about schemes and coaches at about mid-season next season. We’ll see at that point which if us is an actual Cowboys fan and which is you, Hennessey.

Assuming you haven’t gotten yourself banned and are instead hanging out in my PMs like you like to do, telling me how unfair everyone is to you when you can’t follow the simplest of the site rules.

Note that Watt as a pass rushing specialist DE was actually *perfect* for Rod's defense, given that his DEs don't play more than 70% in rotation anyway.

Which is why the DLaw signing didn't make much sense either. We paid top elite money for a 70% position. Bet the other high priced end rushers didn't come off the field that much if healthy for games.
