Owens acuses Cowboys owner of reneging on contract

From Saturday's Globe and Mail
March 27, 2009 at 10:53 PM EDT

Wide receiver Terrell Owens believes Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reneged on a personal commitment to keep him on contract, and suggested that the owner's son, Stephen Jones, the executive vice-president of the NFL team, was behind his release this month.

"You hear all the speculation, and you talk to the owner of the team, and he reassures you, you're not going anywhere and then, out of left-field … you get blindsided," Owens, 35, said in an interview with Rogers Sportsnet, to be broadcast tomorrow evening.

Owens, who had signed a four-year contract extension with Dallas last summer, will instead play with the Buffalo Bills on a one-year contract in the 2009 season. With his production having dropped after signing the $34-million (all currency U.S.) deal last June, he became expendable when the Cowboys traded three draft picks to the Detroit Lions in October for Roy Williams, who signed a $45-million extension, with $27-million guaranteed. Owens was also
considered to be a divisive locker room presence.

"I know whole-heartedly he [Jerry Jones] wanted me there," Owens said.

"There were some people I know who got in his ear that pressured him to make that decision. For that, it's sad. You let two or three people conspire to get me out of the situation."

Owens caught 69 passes for 1,052 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

When Jones released Owens, he said: "You take age as a consideration. … In this particular case, we have an outstanding player in Roy Williams, and it was a significant factor in the decision I made to release Terrell."

Why Buffalo?

"Why not?" Owens said. "They were really after me, they wanted me, despite everything that had been said negatively about me. It was a no-brainer."

Owens told USA Today he doesn't report for voluntary workouts by custom,
and won't change his routine for the Bills.

Who didn't see this coming.

Two or three people conspired to get him out of the situation?

He never realizes he had any part in all the drama that follows him. It's always everyone else, lol. If he would have been able to shut his mouth publicly then he would still be in Dallas. Period, point blank!

Great job Stephen, Jason and Tony! Great job!!!

Blindsided? Almost as soon as the season was over the speculation started. How wrapped up in yourself do you have to be to not see it as a possibility if that many news sources are talking about it?

To be fair...

IF Jerry did tell T.O. that he wasn't going anywhere, despite the media speculation... then cut him... then I'd say that qualifies as being "blindsided".

Either way, who cares. He's a Bill now, and I'm too excited about the offseason and the '09 season to give this story a 2nd thought.

Good luck in Buffalo, T.O.

Man oh man, just imagine how different T.O.'s career would've panned out had he decided as a rookie to go the Marion Barber route regarding media access. He'd never have made his way to Dallas, that's for sure. Might still be a 49er today.

TO should take the cowards' way out and just do like others who speak to the media as an "unnamed source" . You get your views out there and don't have to take any responsibility for saying it...y'know, real stand up and man like.

LOL.

It's taken from a TV interview. You make no sense.

And this is a guy who wants to be heard and doesn't care if he creates controversy. I am sure he wasn't forced to do the interview. He was asked and as usual he can't say no.

Well, maybe he should have kept his promise to Jerry when he first arrived. Jerry probably felt blindsided too.

What part doesn't make sense? Basically just said was that he shouldn't put his mug out there when he speaks. he should do what cowards do; whisper and hide instead.

I don't know that he broke his promise to Jerry.

Cowboy Nation is down on T.O. now... but in 2006 and 2007, Owens was a HUGE positive for our football team.
Not even Dallas fans who hated T.O. could deny that.

In 2008, it appears clear that T.O.'s negative attitude DID contribute to our poor season. But it wasn't as big a contribution as Tony Romo's injury. Or as big as Felx Jones' injury. Or as big as Roy Williams' inability to contribute. Etc.

I'd say all-in-all, Jerry got a pretty nice overall three years from Terrell Owens. It didn't work out as well as we all hoped it would. But overall, I think T.O.'s positives as a Dallas Cowboy DO outweigh his negatives, over the course of his three year tenure.

Does TO think he is closer to Jerry than Stephen? How wrapped up in yourself must one be to think he can come between a dad and his son. Wow...

Well, this is a bit sad. Owens is now reduced to getting his views voiced by Canadian news outlets. He really is in football Siberia.

I agree. Really I do. Owens didnt keep him promise because he cant control himself. He is broken.

The antidote was to use him to his strengths and we didnt. Lost a golden opportunity in those 3 years. Coulda snuck into SB in 07 and 08 was supposed to be it. Oh well.

Yeah, he did. Mouth-wise.

Did anyone really think that he wasnt going to say this? I mean come on. Its TO.

Its Jerry and killing the contract that he just gave him.

Thats all the gasoline and tinder you need.

Yup, and a paper that specializes in financial reporting-not sports.

His fan club is having a real tough time coming to grips with the reality that all the "cancer" reports have been confirmed, and that the person who wanted him gone the most is the most respected person in the Cowboys' organization.

What was it Eugene Lockhart said when he got shipped to NE, at a time when they were awful? Something like "Football is a cold business. But it's even colder in New England." (or Buffalo)

It's poetic justice that the only teams that wanted TO were the dregs of the league.

This thread is going to get ugly but before it does.

#1 This is only the beggining of the TO comments. There will be other times when he's bored or taking on another personality that he decides he needs to comment on his former teams. I just hope it passes like summer storm.

#2 Anyone know how to contact Websters Dictionary? There is a new example for the word "dilusional" they need to consider.
