I'm actually excited he's back. Low expectations, but there is potential if he can ever stay healthy. What he brings in the return game alone is worthwhile a roster spot.

I like Austin too. He was hurt last year, but when he played he looked good. He can run back kicks and punts - we haven't had someone dynamic at that position in a long time. He has speed. But if this team believes he is the replacement for Beasley in the slot... well, he's just not.

I would have rather just kept Cole instead of paying Tavon and Hurns...

Not me.
Hurns and Austin both are bigger downfield threats and Austin is much more dangerous as a returner.

Not to mention Hurns in 4 Jax years outperformed Cole in 7 Dallas years.

Tavon had one fewer Td than Beasley last yeAr.
On 57 fewer receptions.

I think they are staying with Hurns right now to be nice and will reach a injury settlement with him.

The 4 Million base salary for Hurns isn't guaranteed so the team picking up their option just gives them the option to get a comp pick back if/when they cut him. Or they could renegotiate his salary downward, but IMO there is no chance he comes back next year at that 4MM salary.

But picking up the option on a non-guaranteed salary was a no-brainer. It was just to keep their options open.

Well we now have a punt returner for six games or so next season.
Ha seriously though I’m glad to keep him.
He has some juice if he can stay healthy

IDK..... I think they really like Hurns as a big Slot.... that is what he played in JAX

TAustin is more of a slash RB3/WR5/PR/Wildcat

No idea what DAL does with Hurns because a guy breaking his leg playing for you can spur some loyalty.
I doubt 4m makes or breaks this team in any event.

I actually thought Hurns was most effective last year(most doesn't mean very) when used out of the slot.
He may be like 1/2 of that slot rotation when all is said and done.

As you note the opting in didn't change anything since he is owed zero GTD money.
Until he plays week 1 it is all just fake money.
If he isn't healthy I'm sure he would be released and get some type of injury settlement.

I love Austin if he is healthy. I'm not opposed to Hurns coming back but not at the 4MM salary. I'd be happy with this:

Amari Cooper
Gallup
Golden Tate
Austin
Two of Hurns/Noah Brown/Cedric Wilson/Draft Pick

That's like saying you'd rather drive a Ferrari than a Ford.

Cole cost 30M over 4 years with 15 GTD.
Hurns has 0 GTD money and max of 4M in base.
Austin almost certainly took a pay cut and was working out at VR during his "free agency".

Beasley is a better player than either guy to be sure but he will also cost a lot more.
And had you re-signed him he still only plays 2/3 of your offensive snaps when fully healthy.

Hurns is 2+ years younger and Austin is one year + younger than Bease as well.

You can not pay players for what they were or what they did previously going forward long term.

I don't think they have to do an injury settlement for a non-guaranteed contract but @Nightman could let us know.

I think the team has loyalty in some cases, they showed a lot of it in giving Josh Brent a make work job instead of letting him stew at home on the DUI tragedy. And they clearly love Hurns personally, you could see that with Garrett out on the field when he was hurt.

But that said, I REALLY don't see loyalty being stacked Four Million Dollars high. I think he is cut or renegotiated down - a lot.
