My mistake.
No biggie, we all make 'em right? I know I've made some doozies.

You said it here though. This is an AFL celebration, that tradition and history.

So you would honestly blame Jerry Jones for not wanting to be lumped in with that?

And again, I am not certain this was purely his choice.
If you go back and look you'll find another thread, I think it's in the NFL Zone, where I posted a message I got from a member of the Cowboys office that this year is about the AFL. That to me does say Jerry may not have a choice.

I sincerely hope that is the case, but let's be honest, no one in the media has the huevos to ask or research this story. I sent out an e-mail to several Cowboys beat writers and not one of them responded. My guess is it would interrupt their research in Candice Crawford. I swear they live vicariously through who Tony hits the sheets with.

Even if the NFL told Jerry not to celebrate 50 years this year I am shocked he would simply cave in to that. This is the man who when the NFL became Reebok and Coke he signed on with Nike and Pepsi. Where'd our maverick owner go if he simply rolled over on this?

I contacted Greg Aiello of the NFL about this and he flatly denies that the NFL is prohibiting the Cowboys from celebrating their 50th. He referred me to the Cowboys for an explanation.

Like I said, it's all about Jerry's shiny new toy.

wow i have already received an email back from Mr. Dalrymple .

it was just a short reply, after my name it said:

"we are celbrating the opening of the new stadium this year and will celebrate 50 full seasons of Dallas Cowboys football in 2010."

i know that doesn't answer our questions but it does sort of give us a look at their thinking.
i can live with it and to be honest i am just amazed at how quickly i got a response. Hats off to Rich Dalrymple.

I can't figure out why people need to play semantics with the wording.

We celebrated 25 years in 1984. It was called the Silver Anniversary. Add 25 to 1984. What year does it make it for 50 years?

This is year 50 of the Cowboys. It isn't being celebrated but 8 other teams, all original AFL teams, who got their start the exact same season, are.

Agree. If we celebrated 25 in 1984 then we should be consistent. I really don't keep up with that kind of stuff because frankly it's not that important to me.

I also agree that celebrating the 50th season would have fit in nicely with the new stadium.

This is the same owner who fired Jimmy and designed the double star jerseys in '94, so nothing he does anymore surprises me.

It's nice to know the Cowboys front office still responds to fans. Back in the Tex Schramm days, he would respond to my snail mail EVERY time. Or maybe it was his secretary who did. At least I got his John Hancock at the bottom of every letter - felt tip pen, not a stamp.

As far as the Cowboys logic in this, I don't get it. I believe they would've sold plenty of 50th anniversary stuff this year. I also would've enjoyed the "screw you AFL, we're 50 years old too" that would've resulted from it. After all, the Cowboys are the one NFC team that consistently did well against the AFC back in the 70s when the AFC was dominant.

Interesting.

No matter who is responsible it is idiotic.

Some of you are being silly.

They will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the start of the Dallas Cowboys. You all want them to celebrate the 50th season. Either way it is a "50th".

The Montreal Canadiens celebrated their 100th season last year even though it was only their 99th as one full season was wiped out due to the lockout in 2004-2005. The celebration then morphs into the 100th year celebration this season and ends on December 9, 2009 I believe which is the 100th birthday of the team.

In the end, is it really worth yapping about Jerry's decision?

You're absolutely right... they would have sold plenty of 50th Anniversary stuff this year - which would have taken away from the New Stadium "Inaugural Season" stuff they are trying to sell.

I have no doubt this was a business decision... pump out the New Stadium stuff this year, and the 50th Anniversary next.

2010 is the Vikings' 50th season, and my guess is they will celebrate it then, not in 2011, so no, Jerry won't have it to himself . . .

Yep, just like the Dolphins will celebrate their 50th in 2015 and the Saints will celebrate 50 in 2016...............

Why are we mad that we're getting a lot of attention this year, and then that we'll get some more next year again? If the publicity's good for the franchise, why not spread it out from season to season?

Well, this whole issue may seem like a tempest-in-a-teapot to most, but for those of us who've followed football history, the NFL, AFL and every team up to now have always celebrated seasons, not anniversaries. 2009 is the Cowboys 50th season, and apparently Jerry will let it pass without notice.

So he will celebrate the Cowboys 50th anniversary in 2010 (at the same time that the Vikings will celebrate their 50th season). Jerry's Cowboys will be the only team in memory to celebrate an anniversary as opposed to a season.

Isn't that just like Jerry?

I dont know, seems kind of dumb to me. Celebrating your 50th anniversary in year 51? Makes no sense.
