But you're telling me that if I mouth off to a cop, and he takes some sort of physical action against me (in other words, he initiates a fight), I'm in the wrong?

Generally the police won't get physical with you for mouthing off to them unless you are directly threatening them. Once you do that you cross the line with them. But just shooting off your mouth won't get them to engage you physically.

For the most part I agree with you. Although I have seen some youtube videos with cops responding poorly to being mouthed off at and initiating a physical engagement, I assume that such is pretty uncommon.

What I was tying to figure out was what exactly doomsday meant when he said "diots that mouth off to cops end up screwing themselves over." I was curious exactly how one might screw one's self over by merely mouthing off to a police officer.

If you mouth off to the cops, they'll usually give you a warning, and then try to apprehend you and take you in. If you don't give in to them, then they will get physical with you.

I'm pretty sure it's against the law to verbally harass a public servant. If they warn you to stop and you continue, then they will try to take you in and charge you. It's up to you then to decide whether to cease and desist.
