I'll eat crow on this one. He is better than I thought he was.
If he goes back to his pass happy ways and doesn't run the football, he will be not coaching the Cowboys after the season. The formula is there to succeed, a novice OC could see that! When he was beating the blitzes, we saw how fast Dak getting the ball out too (per 1st half of 2021 season)
they take more chances with Dak's passing than they do with Cooper Rush.
Kellen will want Dak to be more daring and tight squeeze passes than they want with Cooper Rush.
When Dak returns, Kellen may run the ball Less than what we were running heavily with Rush, because Kellen will become more greedy and more pass happy conscious.
Instead of using maintaining the run game to better help our play action,.. watch how Kellen goes right back to that damn shotgun formation down after down, because he wants envision Dak as
Pat Mahomes again.
The issue is With Zack, Tyron, and by the looks of it Tyler they will have significant cap in the OL in a couple of years. If Tyron retires it will help when Tyler comes up. I really do not want the team to pay a guy like Steele who is just above average as a tackle, his ceiling is Doug Free, Free was not horrible but I always felt if you could find a younger/cheaper replacement that was on par you do it. Steele will get around 8-9m as above average lineman in a lineman starved NFL. Where do you rate him on this list.Yet pass protecting OTs are difficult to find.
i've seen the McGovern, Biadasz, and like C Wiliams struggle, has that been the case with Steele thus far since he's started ?
Super Bowl contenders Cincy needed OT help so badly on their OL that they signed up Lael Collins in the offseason, and he's still doesn't appear to be the long term answer at this point.
if you get an OT that is not giving up sacks and pressures, it'd maybe in our best interest to cement him long term, or franchise tag him if its' so imperative that
you're desiring another one year strong look (ala DLaw)
This season is still ongoing but from all indications, unless its' Vikes Danielle Hunter, he's not gonna be pressed against any elite edge guys, until playoff time (Niners' Bosa?) .
He is higher than top 20 imo.
I think he is already top 10.
Nobody....NOBODY has beaten him.
The reason he got bashed week 1, as I stated all that following week, was not his actual play but his 4 penalties. He has played the same every week.
This is only building on last year where he outplayed Collins at RT. People bashed Steele bc PFF had a lower grade on him because they also factored in his starts at LT last year. Lazy people just used that as their measure of him.
As I said ALL offseason, we upgraded at RT.
Steele is one of those players like McGovern, Biadasz, and like C Wiliams was, guys that you use to spackle the holes, serviceable guys but have a plan to have their replacement on the roster when it comes contract year. Unless he is a really high level RT there is no need to try and re-sign unless the amount is reasonable.
is he worth 12-15m a year?Steele is a strong run blocker and he hasn't allowed a sack this season, according to at least two sites (which fits what we've seen as well). One site says he did not allow a sack last season, although I question that. He is playing like a high-level RT.
I say this as someone who was concerned that his level of play would drop after being given the starting role and wanted to keep Collins and play him at guard if Steele showed he could handle the starting role.

That is the the thing you are going to re-sign him you can't let him hit the market, Havenstein is making 11.5m for this season, Lane Johnson and Ramcyzk is tops for RT at19.5M. If Steele hits FA he will be closer to 15M if not higher. There is a gap between top 5 RT and Havenstein at 6 pay wise.At this point, yes. But we've got a long way to go. If he continues to play well enough that he doesn't allow more than a sack or two for the whole season, then you open up the wallet because that's top right tackle play from a young player. Continually replacing your good starters isn't how you build a team.
At $12 million per year, he'd be the 25th-highest paid tackle (this year's numbers, so he'd probably be less than that next year ... and his first year wouldn't actually be $12 million anyway more like $5 million or $6 million). $15 million might be a little high for a right tackle.
I don't know if Steele will ever be "dominating", but the guy is proving to be a consistent and steady starter at RT that just doesn't make the mistakes or loses the battles that cost teams games.Steele has come a long way...he's steady and smart....not dominating...at least, not yet. I'm excited for this kid.

Cap is going to go up. You have 3 guys that will get definite raises and they are at premiere positions, Lamb, Diggs, and Parsons, all will get a raise around when Steele will need one as well. Tyron if he retires will help after next season is over, Lamb's salary is probably the biggest wild card right now I don't think he has earned top #1 money. Lets not forget Dak is also due for a new contract soon. My guess is he gets a new contract from Dallas. There is a lot of moving pieces to the cap but with 4-5 players due up for huge pay bumps in the coming years Steele maybe a luxury they can't keep.people keep forgetting that not only is the NFL cap going to be more up once the new TV contract deal kicks in, and that will add even more flexibility to those teams
that responsibly manage their cap budget.
But how do we know at this time that Steele's ceiling is only Doug Free like ?
Do you know how to best gauge that, imo ?
- Watch how he handles himself vs the better, elite edge rushers.
Peers will take note and he'll start to be named to All Pro teams.
So do you re-sign him while there's a comforable enuff contract numbers or do you wait for him to be UFA, and have to place in a situation
where you have to significantly pay him more.
Athletically wise, Steele is no slouch.
His athleticism and length-wingspan is supposedly what attracted the Cowboys to sign him as an undrafted rookie.
What made him drop to such a point to make him undrafted, was he was horrible technically, and he was very lacking in strength core.
As his play was down, so was his self confidence.
Obviously those areas have been vastly much improved due to Steele himself and his support cast of coaches and strength trainers.
i had even heard he's had special training with the Duke-guy the team has some of sorta personal consultant among OL guys.
Yes but there are others that will be demanding larger parts of the pie after next season like Diggs, Dak, Lamb. They will be followed by Parsons and Tyler Smith. I know there are places for savings cut/rework zeke, and Tyron possibly retiring or the very least hitting FA after 2024 seasonWe are going to pay market value no matter what that is if we want to retain a player who is playing like a top RT. If he only gives up one or two sacks this year (or none like he has so far) then he will be playing like a top RT. Our fans always expect or want our team to pay less than others for players. I have no problem with the team paying market value if Steele shows he's worth it. Shores up that position for possibly the next 10 years.
We actually have his rights for one more season since he'll be a restricted free agent after this year, I believe, so that gives us some negotiating power since he'll want to get a long-term deal rather than a one-year tender. Dallas has some leeway to work with.
