Been MIA a bunch this year.
Are you on drugs, pal??
That "MIA" defense has given up 65 points in 5 games (13.0 ppg), allowed 234.0 yards per game... only one opposing offense has gained over 300 yards in a game, that being the high-powered Texas Tech offense, which gained 414 yards... this means their other 4 opponents have averaged 189.0 yards per game...
And the last 2 games, the defense has been positively dominant, holding UTEP and Colorado to a COMBINED 184 yards and 14 points...
More stats for you-- Horns opponents have had 146 carries in those 5 games (29.2 per game), for 235 yards (47.0 ypg), which works out to a lofty 1.6 yards per carry average... only one opponent has gained 100 yards rushing on them, Louisiana-Monroe gained 101 on 35 carries... on the other end of the scale, Tech had -6 yards rushing on 18 carries...
When it comes to pass defense, only 1 opponent has thrown for 200 yards or more in a game, or completed 50 per cent of its passes or more (Tech)... they gained 420 yards passing, but threw the ball 62 times to get there... the other 4 opponents completed 55 of 129 passes (42.6 per cent), for 515 yards (128.8 ypg)... so all combined, opponents have completed 101 of 191 passes (52.9 per cent), with 8 ints, for 915 yards (183.0 yards per game)...
This is, in fact, the best Horns defense I've seen in a long time... in fact, the only real weakness I see with Texas this year is their running game, and their punter, who scares the crap out of me every time he drops back to kick... their defense is excellent, their pass offense is dangerous (especially Shipley, who has 47 catches in 5 games, and Dan Buckner, who has 29), and their return game is lethal (DJ Monroe has returned 2 kickoffs for TDs, Shipley has 2 punt return TDs)...
Truth is, this looks like a better team than the 05 National Champions, right now... I'm psyched to see them face the meat of their schedule, and truly believe that the OU game will be their toughest test all season-- Oklahoma State, Kansas and Missouri don't impress me all that much (especially not with Dez Bryant suspended)...
Missouri struggled to beat Bowling Green at home, and lost to the only ranked team they've played so far (Nebraska)... OSU lost to Houston at home, giving up 45 points (suggesting they have a hard time with a good passing attack), and barely beat A&M yesterday... Kansas is currently unbeaten, but have been pushed to the limits the last 2 weeks in home wins against Southern Miss and Iowa State, both mediocre 3-3 clubs... all 3 are good teams, but the Horns are better... but when it comes to OU, the talent level is pretty similar... I think the difference will be the Horns' defense against the Sooners' shaky offensive line...
At least, I hope that will be the difference, LOL... anyway, if the Horns get out of the Red River Rivalry with a W, I can easily see them going unbeaten this year...
