I never thought much of Romo before I saw him going into the season where he took over for Bledsoe. When I saw him in that second half, despite the mistakes, there was at least some sort of burst with the offense.

I thought he had a better name than Henson, and that it sounded better in association with the Cowboys greats, and I joked about that on the forum. But I honestly was a Henson backer for a long time. Not going to say I predicted he would rise to where he is right now.

I remember back in 05 when everybody still thought Henson was going to be something, Parcells said that preseason something like "Just wait, this Romo is going to be the one that surprises you guys."

I was all excited like maybe Romo was gearing up to be a stud QB, and of course I was just figuring I was being a homer and no way would he turn out to be a star. God I'm glad I was wrong.

Am I the only one that knew beyond a shadow of a doubt the moment that Romo stepped through the front doors at Valley Ranch, that he was the future QB of this franchise?

Whats wrong with you people?

 :D ;)

What's interesting is that the Bucs had him on their radar (obviously, everyone knows how Gruden loves QB's), but they were caught in the "lack of strong opponents" quagmire that teams around the league reiterate when asked "what the heck were you thinking when you passed on Romo?" Also, Chris Simms was apparently the future of the franchise.

Things happen for the reason.

I'm just ecstatic that we ended up on the right end of this one for once...after reading those Chad vs. Quincy threads during TC years ago...after watching the posted NFL Europe footage of what we hoped Drew Henson could be. This guy was right there the whole time.

I don't care what people say about Parcells. He gave us, the fans, what could turn out to be the best QB in the league for years to come. I know Payton and Hess had to talk him into it, but once he was signed, Parcells knew how to groom the kid. He's classy, he's charismatic, and best of all...he's damned good.

Thanks, Bill.

Brady credits Bledsoe for his mentoring in 2001. Drew had a way of grooming great backups - lol

yeah, i remember Henson going to NFL Europe. there was talk Romo would go as well but then they decided to keep him at Valley Ranch. looking back that speaks volumes. they thought more highly of Romo and wanted to work with him more closely during that offseason. in one of Parcells press conferences i remember someone asking him about Henson's NFL Europe progress and Parcells said very little about it which was his way of saying the kid didn't have "it".

I thank QC for giving us Romo.

If he doesn't get cut that year, Romo probably does (b/c of Jerry loving Henson).

I always knew I loved the weed!

I will 2nd this thread:bow:

We were certainly blessed that he came here, instead of Denver, and that he wasn't traded off to the Saints when Payton wanted him.

Things would be a lot different right now if either of those, or any of the other things mentioned in this thread, had happened.

I'm sure Romo is thanking his lucky stars for not being shipped off to New Orleans as well... otherwise he'd still be warming the bench for Drew Brees...

(Well I suppose, I actually don't remember if the 3rd round pick offer for Romo was before or after they signed Brees?)

Either way, thank God that Sean Payton didn't have the wisdom to accept Jerry's request for a second rounder or the hopes of this team would be much less dynamic.

I think BP had the measure of both Romo and Henson early on. He knew Henson just did not have that special "it" that matters and that Romo might be able to be "it" but needed a lot of work.
BP is the one that protected Romo when Jerrah was in love with Henson, Hutch, etc.

You could say the same about alot of players Parcells brought to VR.

Weather or not the game had passed BP by can be debated for a long time, especially in regards to his methods of handeling his players. However, as a talent evaluator, you have to put him amongst the best in the business.

I would wager that Miami gets it turned around with him making the personell decisions.

I seem to remember Romo saying that Parcells was a big reason as to why he signed with Dallas...and that he would have signed with Green Bay if they had wanted him since he was a huge Pack/Favre fan.

Its true. Romo was NEVER in danger of being cut. In fact, a couple things he said in an interview during QC's last training camp is how I along with a few others knew QC wasnt long for the Dallas Cowboys. Couple weeks later and Q was out the door.

If anybody deservers credit, it is Sean Payton, but even he offered only a second when he was the head coach of the Saints. A franchise QB is worth way more than just a second. I don't think there was anybody out there that thought Romo was this good.

Put it this way:

Romo was luck, pure and simple.... It is like the sun exploding and us living to tell the tale... OK, maybe not that lucky...

BTW, there is nothing in the historical tendency of Bill Parcells to assume that he was 'grooming' Romo for a starting role. He thought he was probably just an adequate back-up. BP had his hand forced into playing Romo, because his favorite son Drew Bledsoe was stinking it up so bad, he had no choice to bench the statue. The guy left Dallas through an e-mail, and during the last season, he had total desparation on his face to the point his ex-players had to come down and provide him support. If BP had any idea things would turn out like this, I'm pretty damn sure he would not have quit like he did. Further, Parcells never opened up the offensive playbook, an offense that was the second best in the NFL the next year, only because Brady played lights out. If he had that much faith in Romo and knew how great he was going to be, he sure had a strange way of showing it.

But I guess it was all part of his future vision...
