The 2015 draft

Does one year (2015) make a "current philosophy?"

McClay has been fine. With the caveat of not knowing how much input Callahan had on the OL selections.

Drafting =/= FA signings. That's Jerry and boys.

I do agree, we need to be players in FA.
Well said Trouty, need to get Play Makers in Free Agency !!

All you Mock fans should know you have to grade the draft on a curve
@Alexander has a better successful post rate and that is terrible

Gregory was a Jerry pick.

I think McClay drafted Jones as a CB.

Chaz Green was really good in two starts last year at LT. His talent was worth the injury risk. It failed but was a reasonable risk/reward pick. His fail this sesson was partially due to a hip injury.

Wilson is a starter.

Ryan Russell just had a sack for Tampa this past week.

Injuries detailed Nzeocha. They wanted to keep him but SF signed him from the PS.

Gibson showed talent but butted heads with the coaches.

Swaim is contributing.

It didn't turn out great but the decision process by McClay was reasonable
.

It was not the 2009 draft where none of the picks made sense from day one. It was not stupid reasoning like Bobby Carpenter and Jacob Rogers being drafted by Parcells because he knew their fathers. It was not Shante Carver in the 1st despite being universally regarded as a mid round talent. He even said he expected to get picked sometime before the 5th round.
Making good picks and all of them working out is much different
Jones was a good prospect taken where he should have been
Green showed talent in college but often injured
There is a risk in those types but you can’t pass on every player that has been injured
Some picks don’t work out, some are just bad picks
Carpenter was way over drafted and that’s the kind of picks that are bad picks

2465 draft picks and 629 became starters for at least half of their careers

That's about 25% success rate. Now besides the 629 that became starters many more became functional role players.

I agree that the overwhelming percentage of draft picks become useless that's why I value FA more

If only 1.75 picks each season becomes a starter, how long would it take to rebuild without free agency

Good info and great point !!! Dallas needs to get active in free agency this year and find playmakers

The Cowboys got much better at the draft process when McClay got promoted a few years ago but their free agency selection process has been a fail. It's all been relatively smalls dollar fails but they've failed nonetheless.
Thorton - 4M per, was playing well in Philly as a run defender but just not very good here.

Paea - 2M per, played well but the knee must have been an issue when he signed.

Carroll - 3M per plus 1M bonus, played decent in game 1, then terrible for the first half of game 2, then out with a concussion.

All of them combined were less significant than back when they gave Carr the 5-year, 50M deal but the concern is the process. I'm concerned that if they spend money on a free agent that it will be the wrong one.

I think Garrett's brother is the guy in charge of scouting free agents. I'm not certain if he reports to McClay or to Stephen Jones.

I was impressed that they cut bait when those players failed because in the past they would have kept them trying to prove something.

that fell into their laps. They did nothing to get credit for that one.

Well. Yes. It was Jerry selling the Cowboys that got us a free first round talented player, at the time, for nothing much.
