I know Will McClay gets almost knighted status on here but this one hurts. Check out 2015 draft for Dallas:

Byron Jones
Randy Gregory
Chaz Green
Damien Wilson
Ryan Russell
Mark Nzeocha
Laurence Gibson
Geoff Swaim

This is a huge indictment of current philosophy of not spending in FA and addressing all needs in draft. That sounds good in theory but you have to actually go out and draft well.

Does one year (2015) make a "current philosophy?"

McClay has been fine. With the caveat of not knowing how much input Callahan had on the OL selections.

Drafting =/= FA signings. That's Jerry and boys.

I do agree, we need to be players in FA.

This is why I don't get too excited like some of the draft nerds around here.
The NFL draft is a huge gamble no matter who you are. You can only project so much.

But hey the closer we get to the draft these dorks will be willing to trade Zeke and Dak for a 2nd round pick. Just watch.

not giving up on this draft just yet

Byron Jones - IMO, misused as a safety...if he gets more free safety work and CB work next season, he cound pan out
Randy Gregory - druggie, clean him up and he could be very good
Chaz Green - ugh, never liked this pick and I bet Dak doesn't either (see: Atlanta game)
Damien Wilson - has played a lot, not an all-pro, but not horrible
Ryan Russell - who?
Mark Nzeocha - burger-flipper?
Laurence Gibson - need fries with that?
Geoff Swaim - has seen playing time

Throw in Collins and this class could turn out to be ok

Exactly the issue with the philosophy. If u draft poorly you have zero chance.

everything I have read is Dallas will do eveything thru draft and will not be active in FA. Only way I see that working (when they whiff in draft) is doing what they did with getting Irving from KC practice squad.

Hated pretty much every pick that year except Wilson, unfortunately, he hasn't amounted to much. Swaim might be the best of the bunch, at least he excels at something (run blocking).

I dont see any player they drafted in 2015 getting 2nd contract with Dallas.

Gregory was a Jerry pick.

I think McClay drafted Jones as a CB.

Chaz Green was really good in two starts last year at LT. His talent was worth the injury risk. It failed but was a reasonable risk/reward pick. His fail this sesson was partially due to a hip injury.

Wilson is a starter.

Ryan Russell just had a sack for Tampa this past week.

Injuries detailed Nzeocha. They wanted to keep him but SF signed him from the PS.

Gibson showed talent but butted heads with the coaches.

Swaim is contributing.

It didn't turn out great but the decision process by McClay was reasonable
.

It was not the 2009 draft where none of the picks made sense from day one. It was not stupid reasoning like Bobby Carpenter and Jacob Rogers being drafted by Parcells because he knew their fathers. It was not Shante Carver in the 1st despite being universally regarded as a mid round talent. He even said he expected to get picked sometime before the 5th round.

thats my point. I am all in with not spending in FA and crushing it in draft. However, its leaves almost no margin for error/misses. They missed on that entire draft. So as other teams are signing their 2015 draft picks to 2nd contracts...Dallas will be looking off into distance not acknowledging a thing.

Most importantly, no RB drafted to replace DeMarco. Going with Joseph Randle was a huge fail. We still would have been terrible once Romo got hurt but at least that would have freed up the Top-10 pick we'd have in 2016 on another premium position of need.
