i said 3-4 IF taco bombs and no one steps up.
We been doing the 3-4 from Parcell years all up into Ryans last year here. I believe we only had a top 10 defense, maybe like twice in all those years, with minimal turnovers. Do you really want to go back to that? Our organization has shown it can build an offense, but a defense... not so much.

dont agree.
after the season, paea, mayowa and dlaw are gone.
you have left - taco, crawford, irving, collins - all of which can be 5
you just said thornton can be a 5.
so we have plenty of 5, and taco is 280 and has frame to bulk up.

tapper can play OLB on the strong side.
you can put jaylon on the other OLB until you draft someone and/or sign someone.
you have plenty of ILBs.

you would need NT who can be had after round 1 and remember ratliff played at ~300lb?
you would use round 1 on OLB on the weak side and perhaps sign a FA.
after which you could have tapper, jaylon and the #1 pick/FA blitz from LB positions.
much more unpredictable than what we have.
never should have fired ryan.

Roster turnover is a reality every season. All I see with you is that you're ready to give it up after one preseason game where the starters did not even play.

Also while 4-3 DE are harder to find it's not like it was in the 1980s in 90s when 3 - 4 defenses were rare. At least half the teams run at now. Pass rushers are rare in general.

Alexander posted this in a different thread. Fact of the matter is that it is more reasonable to get passrush LBs than passrush DEs.

I am not ready to give up.
I am watching and hoping.
Look at the chart I just posted that Alexander provided above.

I am looking at this in light of the most difficult piece.
On offense it is the QB and you could use many many #1 picks and not get one.
For 4-3, it is the RDE which is almost as hard as the QB.
For 3-4, it is the OLB, and look Watt was taken after how many DEs were taken last year?
It is much easier to get a pass rush LB than a DE - may be because they could blitz from any gap.

All of those guys can play right defensive end except for maybe two. I have no idea what point you think you're making.

It is interesting to see you are still panicking over not drafting multiple defensive ends.

When we were a 3-4 all the talk was about how it was trash and all the top defenses in the league were 4-3. We should always have a ton of guys rushing the passer and stop dropping guys into coverage all the time etc etc etc. It was soooo easy to draft defensive ends instead of hybrid pass rusher/coverage lbs, etc.

Grass always looks greener on the other side I suppose. I think we'll be fine the way we are once these guys get more experience.

Lets hope these guys are real.
If not, I prefer the 3-4.
Never should have changed to the 4-3 - destroyed Ware's body etc.

Should have just stayed with the 4-3 and dedicated high draft picks to support that. Check out the DL draft picks from the mid 2000's on.

Assuming we draft at #25, which do you think would be easier to get playmakers in their rookie year?

3-4
1. OLB
2. NT
3. G
4. OLB
5. NT

4-3
1. DE
2. DE
3. G
4. DE
5. DE

Most defenses now are hybridized. They deploy any number of formations. The Cowboys, for instance, often utilize a three man line in their nickel and dime defenses, which are used far more often than the base defense.
